“Go Slow” (Past & Present Futures From Alief to Abuja),” will feature a sculptural installation by Acclaimed Nigerian-American artist and Houston native Dozie Kanu, of an interpretive Mothership, inspired by Parliament-Funkadelic’s iconic Mothership Connection—Live from Houston (1986).

Dozie Kanu is an interdisciplinary artist born in Houston, Texas, and currently living and working in Santarém, Portugal. His practice explores the boundaries of sculpture through investigations of form, function, materiality, and utility—often filtered through a deeply personal lens shaped by lived experience. Kanu’s work challenges the traditional canons of Western art history, foregrounding a diasporic perspective that brings issues of domesticity, identity, and belonging into focus. His objects resist easy categorization, existing simultaneously as sculptural forms, performative gestures, and communicative tools.

Eldorado Ballroom Houston kicks off tomorrow and we’re excited to present two free screenings for our “Monuments Are Here” film series, at the open to the community.

“Monuments Are Here,” is a night of film exploring object constellations, Black domesticity, and the spiritual art of collecting. The evening also features the Houston premiere of the Saint Heron short Film “Monuments Are Here” film starring Gene “Shady The Great” Thomas.

Programmed by Nuotama Bodomo and Solange Knowles, the two artists reflected on the histories of journeys into home, intimate space, the objects that occupy them, and the worlds contained within their energies. Even when small in stature, the objects are monumental story keepers and moment guardians holding universes within their form.

First premiered at the Guggenheim, we explore sacred collections, and the stories held within the objects we keep.

Tickets Are Free with RSVP — and go live today at 11AM CST via performingartshouston.com.

Capacity is limited, and tickets are first come first serve.

Next week in Houston, Eldorado Ballroom continues its celebration of the profound influence of Black women in orchestral and symphonic music with “On Dissonance,” conducted by Jeri Lynne Johnson.

In 2005, Jeri made history as the first Black woman to win an international conducting prize—the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship. She has since led major orchestras and opera companies across the U.S. and Europe, including the Bournemouth Symphony (UK), the Weimar Staatskapelle, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the São Paulo Municipal Symphony. In 2022, she conducted Tania León’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Stride at the Kennedy Center Honors.

Jeri is also the Founder and Artistic Director of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra—a model for the 21st-century American orchestra that unites artistic excellence with cultural diversity and deep community engagement.

Tickets for “On Dissonance,” happening June 9 at Jones Hall, are on sale now.

“On Dissonance” features works by the esteemed late composer and educator Julia Perry, alongside compositions by Tania León and Solange Knowles.

Included in the evening’s program are two works by Solange Knowles: “Not Necessarily In Arms Reach,” a recent piece for two tubas that blends gospel harmonies, minimalist textures, Black Southern marching traditions, and the quiet power of ritual repetition; and “Villanelle For Times,” her 2022 composition for the New York City Ballet’s “Play Time”, which merges classical form and jazz idioms with her distinct experimental approach. This will mark the first performance of “Villanelle For Times” outside its original ballet premiere.

Together, the works of Perry, León, and Knowles form a resonant dialogue—linking legacy with innovation and foregrounding the often-overlooked brilliance of Black women in classical music.

“On Dissonance” takes place June 10 at Jones Hall. Tickets available now.

The design refresh of Braun’s Wandanlage hi-fi audio wall unit from 1965 features a polished chrome surface, a nod to Houston’s slab culture, and was accompanied by a musical remix in collaboration with Houston sound designers The Chopstars.

“Chrome has a long history within the Black canon of aesthetics, whether that’s platinum chains or gold teeth, there’s that shine that heightens importance,’ said the designer. The material also references Abloh’s musical universe, from the brass and silver instruments of Mamie Smith’s 1920s blues band to the bespoke polished slabs on the cars made popular by the hip-hop stars of the 1980s.”
