Deaf Awareness Week is from May 6th to May 12th, here I am being vocal about it to raise awareness on the challenges faced by the deaf community. Whether youāre fully deaf, partially deaf- like me, or have hearing loss, this week is a chance to learn, empathise, and take action!
Caption your content! Captions matter! This is often repeated throughout the year, when creating content, whether itās a video reel or a voice-over, always include captions. The simple text makes your content accessible to everyone, those who are deaf, hard of hearing or simply those who donāt what the sound on for whatever reason.
Consider taking a BSL course or check out online resources to expand your knowledge, by learning even a few basic signs, you can communicate more effectively with deaf people.
Be mindful of background noise, it can be incredibly challenging for people with hearing loss. When having conversations, try to minimise distractions by turning off the TV or radio, find a quiet space, and most importantly, face the person youāre speaking to andā¦
Speak properly, when speaking to someone with hearing loss, enunciate clearly and at a moderate pace. Avoid shouting, as it distorts lip movements and can be uncomfortable for the both of you. Maintain eye contact and be patient!
In social gatherings or meetings, ensure that everyone feels included. Use inclusive practices like written agendas, using microphones, and allowing time for questions, lastlyā¦
Share info about Deaf Awareness Week. Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to learn more about deaf culture, communication methods, and the importance of accessibility and inclusion, never say never mind or it doesnāt matter, because we DO mind and we DO matter!
