Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking in Etobicoke, Ontario, announced that the Liberal government will introduce new legislation next week to toughen sentences for violent and repeat offenders and make bail harder to get.
Under the new “ Reverse Onus” rule, those charged with crimes like home invasions, car thefts, , , or will have to prove they deserve bail — shifting the burden from the Crown to the accused.
Carney also said repeat violent offenders could face consecutive sentences, meaning multiple long jail terms for multiple crimes. He added that offenders in cases won’t be allowed to serve sentences at home.
Alongside tougher laws, the government plans to hire 1,000 new RCMP officers over four years, costing $1.8 billion. New cadets will earn $1,000 weekly, with 150 focused on crimes like fraud and money laundering.
