I popped by on Main Street in search of a new book and the manager recommended Recipe for a Good Life by Lesley Crewe. One reviewer calls it Notting Hill meets Cape Breton. Lesley’s book, The Spoon Stealer, was long listed for CBC’s Canada Reads 2022. Set in 1950s Eastern Canada, heroine and detective novel author Kitty leaves Montreal and her Lothario husband for a Cape Breton writer’s retreat. There she discovers a loveable cast of characters and a whole new way of life.

I was going through my list of books in 2023 and picked my top five. They are very reflective of where I am in my life. Three are non-fiction, two cover heartbreak and grace following the end of a marriage, one is an edgy, social satire/mystery and one is just a good old-fashioned escapist read.

What are your top reads of 2023 and what did you like about each book?

Red Fern Book Review’s Top Five Books of 2023

📕 You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith
📕 Superfan: How Pop Culture Broke My Heart by Jen Sookfong Lee
📕 My Own Magic by Anna Kloots
📕 Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
📕 The Five-Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand

On my TBR list: 📕Talking at Night by Claire Daverley

Already a huge hit in the UK, Talking at Night is a story of all the different loves we have in a lifetime. It has been described to have similar vibes to One Day by David Nicholls, and Normal People by Sally Rooney.

Will you be reading this buzz-worthy book?

It may be Fall, but it is never a bad time for beach read. This is my first time reading Elin Hilderbrand and I am hooked. Nantucket is her muse. Her characters are fun and frothy and the storylines a bit deeper than your average lighter read. The Five-Star Weekend tells the story of food blogger Hollis Shaw. She recently lost her husband to a tragic accident and gathers four besties from each decade of her life at her luxurious Nantucket cottage. There are secrets, great outfits, lots of musical references, s*x and food. Do you have a favourite Elin Hilderbrand novel?

📕The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok — one of the top picks for Fall by

“There’s going to be lots of commentary on economic differences, the immigrant experience, motherhood, a lot of big time topics, and I feel like Jean Kwok has all the ability to make this one a real heart wrencher in many different ways. But it also has a mystery component which, you know, is always fun when it keeps you guessing as you're going along.” – Susan Matheson

Just had a great interview today with Bedside Table Books. Each Fall and Summer Susan puts together a must-read list for Red Fern listeners as well as her followers. She always tells me what an impossible time it is narrowing down her choices. Attached is her master list for the season. After a lot of research and contemplation she narrowed her list down to six books. Stay tuned for the interview dropping on October 6.

(I will say that her list is easier to understand than my law professor friend Nikos' whiteboard chicken scratches!)

In case you missed it, Season 4 kicked off last week with an episode on two books I read over the Summer:

📖 The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt– The story of retired librarian Bob Comet. Hoping to fill a void in his life, he volunteers at a senior's centre. Amid a community of strange peers, Bob reflects on his past and his character is revealed.

📖 You Could Make This Place Beautiful by poet Maggie Smith – A firsthand account about the breakdown of a marriage and the rebirth of a person. Told through gorgeous prose, the memoir is sad, funny and hopeful.
