One of Western Canada’s largest Canada Day celebrations is returning to Surrey this summer with a free all-Canadian concert lineup led by Josh Ross.

👉 Josh Ross will headline Surrey Canada Day on July 1 at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre
👉 Tyler Shaw and Lee Aaron are also scheduled to perform
👉 The free festival includes food trucks, amusement rides, a beer garden, and multiple entertainment stages
👉 A fireworks display will close out the event
👉 Gates open at 10 AM and festivities run until 10:30 PM

Vancouver finally gets World Cup soccer and somehow the grass is the VIP guest.

👉 FIFA says BC Place’s roof will stay closed for World Cup matches in Vancouver.

👉 According to Don Hardman, FIFA26 Canada’s executive director of stadium and venue management, the goal is to keep the playing surface as consistent as possible across all 16 host cities and climates.

👉 BC Place usually uses artificial turf, but for the tournament, a temporary natural grass surface has been installed over the stadium’s regular field.

👉 Crews are spending several hours each day maintaining it with UV lights, irrigation, and a vacuum ventilation system to help the grass grow inside the stadium.

👉 Basically, the roof is staying closed because the grass has entered its high-maintenance influencer era.

Gastown and the DTES are entering their Mexican Barrio era 🇲🇽🌮

👉 A new initiative between the Gastown BIA and Hastings Crossing BIA is marketing part of Gastown and the Downtown Eastside as Canada’s first Mexican Barrio.

👉 The area highlights Mexican-owned restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural spaces in the neighbourhood.

👉 A map on the Gastown BIA site identifies 19 businesses in the Mexican Barrio, bordered roughly by Cambie Street, Powell/Water Street, Pender Street, and Gore Avenue.

👉 The project is meant to celebrate Mexican culture, food, music, handmade goods, and the growing Mexican community in Vancouver.

👉 With the 2026 World Cup coming, the timing is not exactly subtle. Vancouver is basically getting a little more Mexico before Mexico fans arrive and teach us what actual soccer energy looks like.

Vancouver’s neighbourhood watch program just got upgraded to safari mode 🐾

👉 Vancouver Police say someone found a full-grown African serval under their porch last night.

👉 Yes, a serval. As in, an oversized wild cat that VPD says is about 3 times larger than your typical housecat.

👉 Police and conservation officers were called to a home near Prince Albert Street and East 30th Avenue to help get the “kitty” safely back to her owners.

👉 The owner later apologized for the neighbourhood disruption, saying the serval broke her tracker and “won’t escape our house again.”

👉 They also said she’s well kept, super lovable, and that some people may meet her at English Bay this summer in her stroller.

👉 Honestly, only in Vancouver does a porch cat emergency end with a possible influencer launch and a beach stroller tour.

Vancouver’s World Cup visitor guide is not exactly giving “welcome basket and good vibes.” 😅

👉 The official Vancouver FIFA “Need to Know” guide warns visitors about emergency alerts, medical care, local safety resources, and B.C.’s toxic drug crisis.

👉 The guide says B.C. is dealing with a toxic drug public health emergency involving fentanyl and other deadly contaminants.

👉 It also warns that Vancouver’s unregulated drug supply can be unpredictable and may be more dangerous than what visitors are used to elsewhere.

👉 Visitors are told the safest option is not to use unregulated substances, but the guide also includes harm reduction advice like drug checking, naloxone, overdose alerts, and calling 911 if someone may be overdosing.

👉 According to the City’s 2026 civic satisfaction results, 84% of Vancouver residents rated the city’s overall quality of life as good or very good

👉 That sounds pretty optimistic for a city where rent, groceries, parking, and dating apps are all active threats

👉 The City says housing is still one of the biggest local
issues for residents, so it’s not like everyone is living in denial

Vancouver grass is being told to go dormant while data centres are entering their thirsty era 🤖 💧

👉 Stage 3 water restrictions kick in across Metro Vancouver starting June 8

👉 That means no lawn watering, no sprinklers or soaker hoses for trees, shrubs, or flowers, and no filling or topping up pools, hot tubs, or decorative water features

👉 You can still water trees, shrubs, and flowers by hand, use drip irrigation, and water vegetable gardens any time

👉 Metro Vancouver says the restrictions are tied to dry conditions, low snowpack, forecasted drought conditions, and pressure on the water system while the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel is under construction

👉 Meanwhile, B.C. is also preparing for more AI and data centres, which can require major power and water resources for cooling depending on the facility

👉 One proposed data centre in Nanaimo is expected to use between 55,000 and 69,000 litres of water per day for cooling, according to BIV
