Vancouver finally gets World Cup soccer and somehow the grass is the VIP guest.

๐Ÿ‘‰ FIFA says BC Placeโ€™s roof will stay closed for World Cup matches in Vancouver.

๐Ÿ‘‰ According to Don Hardman, FIFA26 Canadaโ€™s executive director of stadium and venue management, the goal is to keep the playing surface as consistent as possible across all 16 host cities and climates.

๐Ÿ‘‰ BC Place usually uses artificial turf, but for the tournament, a temporary natural grass surface has been installed over the stadiumโ€™s regular field.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Crews are spending several hours each day maintaining it with UV lights, irrigation, and a vacuum ventilation system to help the grass grow inside the stadium.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Basically, the roof is staying closed because the grass has entered its high-maintenance influencer era.

Should FIFA just suck it up and give players the real open-roof grass experience? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Gastown and the DTES are entering their Mexican Barrio era ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ๐ŸŒฎ

๐Ÿ‘‰ A new initiative between the Gastown BIA and Hastings Crossing BIA is marketing part of Gastown and the Downtown Eastside as Canadaโ€™s first Mexican Barrio.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The area highlights Mexican-owned restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural spaces in the neighbourhood.

๐Ÿ‘‰ A map on the Gastown BIA site identifies 19 businesses in the Mexican Barrio, bordered roughly by Cambie Street, Powell/Water Street, Pender Street, and Gore Avenue.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The project is meant to celebrate Mexican culture, food, music, handmade goods, and the growing Mexican community in Vancouver.

๐Ÿ‘‰ With the 2026 World Cup coming, the timing is not exactly subtle. Vancouver is basically getting a little more Mexico before Mexico fans arrive and teach us what actual soccer energy looks like.

Thoughts on this? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Vancouverโ€™s neighbourhood watch program just got upgraded to safari mode ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Vancouver Police say someone found a full-grown African serval under their porch last night.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Yes, a serval. As in, an oversized wild cat that VPD says is about 3 times larger than your typical housecat.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Police and conservation officers were called to a home near Prince Albert Street and East 30th Avenue to help get the โ€œkittyโ€ safely back to her owners.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The owner later apologized for the neighbourhood disruption, saying the serval broke her tracker and โ€œwonโ€™t escape our house again.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ They also said sheโ€™s well kept, super lovable, and that some people may meet her at English Bay this summer in her stroller.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Honestly, only in Vancouver does a porch cat emergency end with a possible influencer launch and a beach stroller tour.

Would you be excited or absolutely terrified to meet her at English Bay? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Vancouverโ€™s World Cup visitor guide is not exactly giving โ€œwelcome basket and good vibes.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿ‘‰ The official Vancouver FIFA โ€œNeed to Knowโ€ guide warns visitors about emergency alerts, medical care, local safety resources, and B.C.โ€™s toxic drug crisis.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The guide says B.C. is dealing with a toxic drug public health emergency involving fentanyl and other deadly contaminants.

๐Ÿ‘‰ It also warns that Vancouverโ€™s unregulated drug supply can be unpredictable and may be more dangerous than what visitors are used to elsewhere.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Visitors are told the safest option is not to use unregulated substances, but the guide also includes harm reduction advice like drug checking, naloxone, overdose alerts, and calling 911 if someone may be overdosing.

What would you warn tourists about before they visit Vancouver? ๐Ÿ‘‡

When driving 12 blocks in Vancouver can feel like a full road trip, walking being the top mode suddenly makes sense ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

๐Ÿ‘‰ The Cityโ€™s transportation data says 52% of daily trips in Vancouver were made by walking, biking, or transit

๐Ÿ‘‰ Walking alone made up 29% of trips

๐Ÿ‘‰ Transit made up 17%, while cycling made up 6%

๐Ÿ‘‰ Which explains why everyone here owns either walking shoes, a Compass Card, a bike helmet, or all three like itโ€™s a civic uniform

๐Ÿ‘‰ Very Vancouver to refuse a 12-minute drive because โ€œparking will be annoyingโ€ and then walk across half the city for coffee

Whatโ€™s your go-to mode of transportation? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Vancouverites really said โ€œthis city is financially ruining me, but the seawall looked nice today" ๐Ÿ˜Œ

๐Ÿ‘‰ According to the Cityโ€™s 2026 civic satisfaction results, 84% of Vancouver residents rated the cityโ€™s overall quality of life as good or very good

๐Ÿ‘‰ That sounds pretty optimistic for a city where rent, groceries, parking, and dating apps are all active threats

๐Ÿ‘‰ The City says housing is still one of the biggest local
issues for residents, so itโ€™s not like everyone is living in denial

๐Ÿ‘‰ Itโ€™s more like Vancouver has mastered the art of complaining daily while secretly being emotionally attached to the mountains

๐Ÿ‘‰ Basically, we are stressed, broke, and still somehow giving the city 4 stars

What keeps you in Vancouver despite everything? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Vancouver grass is being told to go dormant while data centres are entering their thirsty era ๐Ÿค– ๐Ÿ’ง

๐Ÿ‘‰ Stage 3 water restrictions kick in across Metro Vancouver starting June 8

๐Ÿ‘‰ That means no lawn watering, no sprinklers or soaker hoses for trees, shrubs, or flowers, and no filling or topping up pools, hot tubs, or decorative water features

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can still water trees, shrubs, and flowers by hand, use drip irrigation, and water vegetable gardens any time

๐Ÿ‘‰ Metro Vancouver says the restrictions are tied to dry conditions, low snowpack, forecasted drought conditions, and pressure on the water system while the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel is under construction

๐Ÿ‘‰ Meanwhile, B.C. is also preparing for more AI and data centres, which can require major power and water resources for cooling depending on the facility

๐Ÿ‘‰ One proposed data centre in Nanaimo is expected to use between 55,000 and 69,000 litres of water per day for cooling, according to BIV

Should B.C. be approving more data centres while Metro Vancouver is tightening water rules? ๐Ÿ‘‡
