The surcharge comes on top of the 3.2% average fare increase that took effect on April 1. BC Ferries says the charge could be reduced or removed if fuel prices drop for a sustained period.

The Canadian government has announced new travel and immigration measures for travellers from affected regions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.

This includes a mandatory 21-day self-isolation period when arriving in the country, and temporarily putting a hold on approving immigration applications from these three countries for 90 days.

These measures start on May 30 and will remain in place until August 29. Health Minister Marjorie Michel said the health risk to Canadians "remains low" and these precautions are being taken out of an "abundance of caution," alongside similar measures by the U.S. and Mexico ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
