The Corvette had already spent decades proving it could embarrass European sports cars, but in 2009 it finally crossed one of the last remaining performance milestones.
With a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 producing 638 horsepower, the C6 Corvette ZR1 became the first factory Corvette to officially break the 200 MPH barrier, reaching 200.5 MPH during testing in Arizona.
It wasn't just fast in a straight line, either. The ZR1 could rip through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds, putting it ahead of exotic machinery like the Ferrari Enzo, Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, and even the Bugatti Veyron in certain tests.
To make things even crazier, it was also the first Corvette to carry a six-figure price tag. At just over $103,000 new, it seemed expensive at the time. Today, it looks like one of the greatest performance bargains Chevrolet has ever built.
