40 Years Later ✨

Yesterday, on the eve of turning 40, I spent the day at Nordik Spa-Nature — slowing down, breathing deeply, and letting myself be still in nature.

And I found myself reflecting… not on milestones, but on the quieter truths life has taught me along the way.

So here are 40 things I know after 40 years of living, loving, healing, growing, parenting, rebuilding, and becoming:

1. Your mental health matters.
2. Children need love, not perfection.
3. Fresh air can change everything.
4. Real friendship feels safe and easy.
5. Rest is not earned.
6. The way you speak to yourself matters.
7. Pets make life better.
8. Movement is self-respect.
9. Don’t shrink yourself for others.
10. A home should feel safe.
11. Nature brings you back to yourself.
12. Healing isn’t linear.
13. Be yourself, not approved.
14. Love takes effort and choosing each other.
15. Exercise changes more than your body.
16. Your kids watch how you treat yourself.
17. Outgrowing things is growth.
18. Water is a quiet form of health.
19. Everyone is carrying something unseen.
20. The best talks happen in simple moments.
21. Calm is something your body needs.
22. Looking good can help you feel good.
23. Strong women just keep going.
24. Go camping — slow down and breathe.
25. Sleep matters more than we think.
26. Kids carry emotional safety forever.
27. Joy and grief can coexist.
28. Boundaries are love too.
29. Ordinary moments are often the best.
30. Real love doesn’t make you beg.
31. Nourishment matters more than restriction.
32. Time outside is never wasted.
33. Comparison steals joy.
34. Self-care ripples outward.
35. It’s never too late to begin again.
36. Peace > proving a point.
37. Laughter carries us.
38. Our bodies remember everything.
39. Be here.
40. Say it.

40 feels less like getting older…
and more like coming home to myself.

Soft. Strong. Grateful. ✨

I’ve been pretty quiet on here lately. Life has a way of making you step back and really look at what matters most — where your energy goes, who needs you, and what deserves your heart.

This past week has been spent with my mom. Doctor’s appointments, scans, difficult conversations about prognosis and next steps, helping her transition back home, and trying to process all the emotions that come with watching someone you love go through something so hard.

Today, after a week that felt impossibly heavy, I went for a beautiful run and it helped me more than I can explain. For a little while, I felt clearer, calmer, stronger. I thought about my mom the whole time. About how strong she is. About how much I love her. About how hard this all is.

More than ever, I’m realizing how important it is to take care of my own mind and body too. Running. Moving. Eating well. Sleeping. Fresh air. Taking care of my mental health. Protecting my energy and keeping my priorities straight. Not because life is easy right now — but because it isn’t. Because I need to stay strong, grounded, and healthy for the people I love most.

I think so many of us wait for a wake up call before we start prioritizing ourselves and our health. But the truth is, our bodies, our minds, and our relationships deserve that care now. Life is fragile and unpredictable, and if there’s one thing this season of life is teaching me, it’s that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary.

Mother’s Day looks a little different this year. Less flowers and brunches, more showing up. More sitting beside her. More listening, helping, advocating, worrying, loving.

And the truth is, I will be there for her through all of it. The way she has always been there for me. ❤️

I feel so lucky to live close to the Gatineau River, along with so many beautiful streams and lakes nearby. Every spring, the sound of running water fills me with hope and joy for the warmer seasons ahead. It feels like nature waking up again — and something in me wakes up too.

If you can, get outside this week and spend a little time near a body of water. Let yourself slow down, listen, breathe, and take in the benefits for yourself.

One of the most fulfilling parts of the past several months has been volunteering as a Guider with Olivia’s Girl Guides troop. It’s been such a joy to learn and grow alongside some of the funniest, kindest, and most inspiring 6–8 year olds I’ve ever met. Working with these kids has reminded me that despite all the craziness in the world, our future is so bright because it’s in the hands of these thoughtful, caring, smart little ones.

It has strengthened my connection to our community, lifted my spirit through the winter months, and given me the sweetest memories watching Livy with her friends. A gentle reminder to get out and volunteer in some way if you can — giving back is a gift to others, and to ourselves too. 💙

Yesterday it was 20° and sunny — Olivia and I were biking in T-shirts. Today it’s 4° and I’m back in a winter coat, hat, and mitts. 😂 Welcome to spring in Canada.

A little reminder: don’t wait for perfect weather to move your body. Spring is all about adapting. Layer up, lower the expectations, and get outside anyway — even a short walk can boost your mood, energy, and mindset. 🌷❄️☀️

Been a little quiet on here lately 😊 No big reason why — life has simply been moving along with lots of beautiful, ordinary moments, and I felt more called to be present than to post. So I listened to that.

I’ve still been here living, running, growing, and doing the ongoing work of caring for my mental health.

With spring arriving (and today’s sunshine feeling like medicine ☀️), I’m feeling inspired to share again — little glimpses of life, running, nature, mindset, family, Lucy, and whatever else feels real in the moment.

It won’t be on any schedule… just whenever it feels right.

If you’re still here, thank you. I’m happy to reconnect. 🥰

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Today we said goodbye to our sweet Lenny.

For almost 14 years, he was by my side. I rescued him shortly after I moved back to Ottawa — I had nothing and knew no one. Through every chapter since then, Lenny was there — steady, loving, and always purring.

He’s been the best big brother to Sam, then Liv, and most recently Lucy. He welcomed every person and animal into our home with the same gentle curiosity and kindness… though a chipmunk or two may have been the exception.

Our house will feel so empty without his calm presence and constant purring.

I miss you already, my good boy.
Rest easy, Lenny. ❤️

🎉 Happy 1st Birthday to our sweet Lucy girl ❤️🐾

From the moment we brought her home at just 9 weeks old, our lives have been filled with muddy paws, endless cuddles, and more love than we could have ever imagined. Watching her grow — from that wobbly little pup who fit in our arms to the confident, goofy, loyal girl she is today — has been such a gift.

This past year hasn’t always been easy (puppyhood definitely keeps you humble 😅), and Lucy’s stubborn streak has tested our patience more than once — but it’s also what makes her her. Determined, strong-willed, full of personality, and oh so full of love. She’s been Livvy’s playmate, my shadow, and Steph’s snuggle buddy — the heart of our home and the source of so much laughter.

Looking back through all these moments — her first snowfall, her first swim, her zoomies through the yard, her quiet naps by our feet — it’s amazing how much life one little golden can bring into a family. 💛

Happy birthday, Lucy. You’ve changed us in the best possible ways. Here’s to many more years of muddy adventures, warm snuggles, and all the love your big heart can hold. 🥹🐶✨

Rest days are just as important as the days we lace up our shoes and run. They’re not about “doing nothing”—they’re about giving our bodies the time and space they need to recover, rebuild, and grow stronger.

This morning, I chose to lean into rest. Instead of heading out for the trail run I’d planned, I nestled into a quiet morning with Livy and our puppy, soaking in some cozy, slower moments. The rest of the day, I’m keeping things simple and giving my body the care it needs to recuperate from illness.

Staying consistent and committed to movement is a priority for me, but so is listening to my body and honoring when it’s time to slow down. Rest days are a critical part of any movement practice, not just for when you’re feeling under the weather, but for keeping balance, avoiding burnout, and showing up stronger in the long run. 💪✨
