Westlock County Quadruplets Mapping the road from pregnancy to delivery and beyond with the Hensch Quadruplets

September 28th; 18 weeks, 3 days

The babies are approximately 5.5 inches long now, or the same size as a smaller cucumber for any avid gardens out there. I can feel them moving now quite frequently- especially after a meal or if I'm bending too much. (They don't seem to care for that!)

I've had a lot of questions regarding the father of the quads and my relationship status. While I wasn't overly comfortable sharing too many details before, for personal reasons, I will share a condensed version of things;

We parted as a couple shortly after I got a positive pregnancy test, long before we knew just how pregnant I was. The separation had nothing to do with the pregnancy itself, and more to do with differing life choices- Mauro had not once doubted his desire to be a father. Unfortunately though, sometimes things between Mom and Dad are not stable, and the best decision is part ways.

We seperated for a few months, but overall stayed in close contact. We've been working on things lately and both maintain a high desire to give our children the best life possible. We feel that the right thing to do for the foreseeable future is to work together again as a couple and raise our children in a loving atmosphere. Mauro will be moving back in within 2 weeks and we'll continue to work on our relationship as we navigate the pregnancy as well as first year with Alivia and our beautiful babies to be.

Latest update; still pregnant! Haha

I had an appointment yesterday with my new OBGYN, Dr Sklar. He will be the lead physician and operating doctor on my C-section day. It was wonderful to meet him and get a little more insight. He advised that the C-section day will be likely between 32 and 34 weeks, but there are many factors which will contribute to the length of gestation, such as the health of the children, and my health combined. I am staying positive and trying to keep my self motivated to still be as active as possible. But... its getting harder!

Dr. Sklar ordered blood work updates and it looks like some of my micro-nutrient counts, most notable my iron levels, are starting to go down quite a bit. While not yet in a dangerous zone, it does remind me that there are 4 little beings inside and growing rapidly! I need to re-evaluate my current supplements and adjust slightly to stay ahead of the demand.

I've been busy with work lately, planning with my team how my maternity leave will go, and having clear job descriptions in place so everything can continue running smoothly. I'm feeling confident in the future of Sunny Creek Cleaning with my best girls at the helm!

The final thing I've been doing is that I've started a gofundme account, and I am planning my gender reveal party. I've put in place a free event in Westlock county to get everyone involved and as excited as I am about the upcoming Westlock County Quadruplets 😍

September 6th

Update: 15 weeks, 2 days
I finally made it in to the maternal fetal medicine and have been set up with a new referring Doctor. Yay!

On Wednesday I had the longest ultrasound of my life haha. It averaged about 1 hour per baby. It was fun and fascinating watching each baby toss and turn. (I can feel them moving already, though only the slightest tickle so far.)

At the end of the ultrasound a doctor came in to speak to the baby's father and everything looked healthy and on track for 3 of the children, but there was some uncertainty concerning the 4th. At this time, they can't be sure, but they suspect there may be a heart defect. It looks as though there may be a hole in the heart of baby B. The doctor wasn't overly worried at this point and booked me back in for another ultrasound on October 6th. He said we would see if things had changed and if the suspected hole in Baby's heart had closed or if we should be referred to a heart specialist. We'll wait and see. Until then, I'm not stressing about it either. There isn't much a person can do either way until the children are born.

14 weeks today! 🤰

My little ones are the size of oranges now. They sure are thirsty too; I'm drinking upwards of 4-6 liters of water a day. It's getting tough planning my days around being close to a bathroom at all times! (I did try cutting back, but if I do, I get terrible headaches and dry lips. Not cool.)

I finally got a call from the Lois Hole Hospital, Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic. I still don't have an assigned OBGYN, but they are taking me in for ultrasounds and general admission. They'll figure the rest out later. (About flippin' time too- I'm carrying quads here, people!) My appointment is set for next Wednesday morning. Stay tuned for more Pictures :)

Update; 13 weeks, 4 days

I'm now officially into the second trimester- yippee! I can say with certainty that I feel a difference in how my body is handling the transition. I feel so much better now than even a week ago! My energy has come back a bit and I no longer get out of breath as easily. (I couldn't even talk in full sentences, or walk 50 feet without gasping for air. It was wild.)

The new challenge for me; bending over! haha. My mid section is growing fast and pretty solid. Bending over is a bit of a challenge, but I am making the best of it. (It's probably not going to get easier!)

I had my appointment with the naturopath this past week, accompanied by Hanoi, the baby's grand mother. It was a short visit. I basically went in for nutritional advice and a more in depth micro-nutrient test than is offered by Alberta Health services. The doctor really had no suggestions for me to change any of my dietary choices so far besides eating maybe few more grains, and trying a magnesium supplement to help with the ever present pregnancy constipation! I am expecting a package in the mail from the clinic shortly with the micro-nutrient testing packet. I'm excited to see where all of my levels are. I'm currently taking almost 20 vitamins and supplements a day!

My family doctor saw me this week as well. He squeezed me in on Wednesday for a quickie! I needed a pap smear, urine test and vitals done before he could send a referral to Edmonton, which he did that afternoon.... unfortunately, I received news today that the clinic he referred me to rejected the referral. (Wtf?!) So they are looking for somewhere else to send me. I am feeling a bit lost in the Alberta health care system at the moment. I will call again tomorrow and chase my referral. Hopefully they get this sorted, and quite fast!

Weekly update: 12 weeks, 4 days

This past week has gone by very quickly! I am definitely starting to show now, at only 12 weeks. I feel about the same with the quadruplets at 12 weeks as I did with a singleton at 5 months!

I took a bit of time and did a photo shoot today at 12 weeks with Alivia, my beautiful 3 year old and Mauro, the quadruplets father.

I had the pleasure of meeting another family in Edmonton with 1 year old quads. Wow! What a beautiful experience that was to meet someone who has already gone through the first year. I was happy to hear their story and receive so many tips and pointers to help along the way. There was honesty in the struggles but also laughs and joy in the triumphs they've experienced. It was an uplifting evening. The biggest take away from the visit was that it truly takes a village of support and love to help make it through the first year.

I am sad to say that I have still not received my referral to Edmonton, nor have I seen a single doctor yet. I've been calling my doctors office, as well as the Edmonton clinics looking for information all week, but I was told to wait until Monday.... Monday has now passed and still nothing. Luckily I did book at a private clinic in Saint Albert (The Holistic Fertility Clinic) and I will see them tomorrow. I am very much looking forward to getting an in depth micro nutrient blood test, and hearing their recommendations for a smooth pregnancy.
As for the Edmonton clinics...

I'll chase them again tomorrow.

August 10
Sunday update; 11 weeks, 3 days.

My babies are the size of large strawberries.
This week has been a lot of thinking, reflecting, planning and meetings. I had my ultrasound on Thursday and everything at that point appeared normal. (I use the term 'normal' loosely haha.) Each baby is progressing at the same rate as a singleton pregnancy. The hematoma is still present, but I was advised that they normally clear up by 18 weeks.

I have noticed in the past two days that I have a persistent ache/pain around my mid section. I am guessing this is do to the accelerated rate of expansion on my uterus. It's working overtime and stretching fast! (I'm already showing a lot- I'll post pictures at 12 weeks.) No referral yet to Edmonton, or any further comment from my doctor, but hopefully next week!

I had an appointment with the pregnancy center in Barrhead after as well. They are kind and supportive there and did offer to search for resources which may be applicable in my case. They also offered a selection of donation items if I need them near delivery time. Certainly this is a valuable resource and I am thankful for the work this organization does to aid those in crisis pregnancies.

I also had several calls and appointments with media and PR agencies this past week. I have decided to go public with my story. It is a rare occurrence, and even more inspiring that I am continuing on as a single mother. I have settled on an agency and will be setting up interviews with news stations and getting social media accounts strictly for my journey to delivery and beyond. My Sunday updates, and other posts concerning the pregnancy will be found there soon, in a more organized way. This move makes sense to try and gain a following and hopefully sponsorships from baby formula, diaper and wipe companies. I will be struggling as it is to meet the financial needs of my growing family, as an entrepreneur with no EI or maternity leave. I am exhausting every option to secure a smooth transition from a working mom into a full time mommy.

Some have asked wondering (and worrying) about the future of my business; Yes! We will still be operational! My staff (and dear friends!) Have been an amazing support system and have offered to take on extra responsibilities to help us keep rolling until I am able to return actively. They love the freedom, laid back nature and flexibility of Sunny Creek as much as I do, and we all want to see it grow and evolve together. I am blessed to have such a loving team of strong women willing to step up and help us carry on. We are all dedicated to keeping Sunny Creek Cleaning running and thriving for many years to come!

August 8th

I'm feeling overwhelmed today, and frustrated with my situation. While it is exciting, and I think about how rewarding and enriched my life will be down the road, surrounded by so much love, the road to getting there isn't paved smoothly. There seems to be many bumps along the way, and endless construction!

Each day is a new setting, with new goals and tasks- the highest priority always being the best mom I can to my 3 year old daughter. Some days, and today in particular, I have a difficult time keeping up and giving my darling girl the same mom she has grown accustomed to- energetic, patient and playful. The house is a mess, and the laundry has piled up. Mom guilt sets in as I ask her to play in mommy's bed today, because mommy isn't feeling well. My meals are normally all home made, nutrient rich and something I'm proud of.... today, I'm nauseated and can't stand the thought of food. Gluten free noodles with bottled pasta sauce in a hurry will have to do... (at least its organic!)

Life isn't going to be the same.
I can't be the same woman I have been.

I've still been going to work 5 days a week (short shifts at least) and managing my business, but I know this will come to and end soon too. My career will have to go on temporary hold. I wont be able to keep up with my tasks at home either- yard work, house work and social visits with friends.

The reality of all the upcoming changes tend to hit me in waves, mostly when I lay in bed at night, but somehow I keep going. "I'll slow down tomorrow" I tell myself.

I am seeing that there will be many sacrifices in the coming months, and I hope my daughter can understand and forgive me for the steps ahead I need to take, and loss of energy I am experiencing. I hope also that I can forgive myself for putting other personal goals on hold, letting my house get messy and prioritizing energy into the new life inside me I am creating.

August 3: Sunday morning update:
10 weeks, 3 days

It's been a whole week since I have shared my exciting news publicly. I've been just as busy as usual, thinking ahead and planning out the next few months as much as possible. My life is definitely going to change!

This past week I was expecting a call from doctor first thing Monday morning, assuming he would read my ultrasound results and s**t kittens! When the call did not come, I wrote it off as maybe just a busy day at the office, or perhaps he was out for the day. Tuesday morning passed as well, and still nothing. Okay... that's weird.

Time to start investigating!

I phoned the doctors office and his assistant informed me that my results had not yet come in from the ultrasound. Maybe wait one more day. Sometimes there are lags in the system.

Wednesday morning came and went, and still nothing. I phoned again to check on the status of things. I was told that the results were posted to my patient accessible Netcare, but had still not shown up on "my chart", which the doctor can see, and work off of. The assistant was kind enough to print the results from Netcare and show them to my doctor so he would be aware of the situation. She also advised that I might want to phone the hospital where I had gotten the ultrasound from and have them resend the results- which I immediately did!

|Another hard stop: the ultrasound lab explained to me that they could NOT resend the results. Once it is completed, and they hit the send button, there's nothing more they can do. It goes 'into the system' and it's out of their hands. "For all we know, it's lost in Ontario!"

In short- My official ultrasound results, which were needed for a referral to the Royal Alexandria hospital, were lost! 🤦‍♀️

My doctor phoned me personally Friday morning and explained the situation he was in, being unable to act without the official doctors version of the ultrasound. He was amazed of course, that I was carrying four children and had only minor nausea and just a few other symptoms! He booked another ultrasound for me on Thursday August 7th and congratulated me on the pregnancy. I think he was a little sad he wouldn't be handling the case, as it is classified as high risk, and only Edmonton monitors such cases.
I did manage to bring up my Netcare and find the patient copy of my ultrasound. All four babies are measuring appropriately for their age and heart beats are high and steady. They did notice a hematoma, which would account for the bleeding I have experienced twice so far. (Each time was about half of a day with light spotting, which cleared up without issue.) This is usually something that resolves on its own over the course of pregnancy, but is definitely something to monitor.

I have gone ahead and booked a naturopathic doctor's appointment for the 19th as well, to get nutritional advice and a detailed blood test for my micronutrient counts. Although I have already started a supplement routine, I would like to have it more personalized and monitored to be sure I am not falling short on any vital nutrients needed for this pregnancy.

Overall, I've been feeling quite well. A little nausea if I have an empty stomach and my resting heart rate is on average about 20 beats higher than my non pregnant rates. I'm still getting around and doing as much as I can with Alivia, while I can. We have been taking advantage of the summer heat and spending lots of time outside, swimming, going to spray parks and visiting friends. I've told her she's going to be a big sister and she's so excited! She keeps asking when the babies will come out of mommy's tummy;
"Not too long" I tell her, "only 6 more months to go!"
