The First Becoming moves through the quieter costs of displacement — isolation, loneliness, and the ache of being in a place that doesn't yet hold a version of you. For Nina Dawan, it's the wilderness that finally receives her without asking who she was before.
But not everyone finds that soft landing. For refugees especially, the hardest part of arriving is rarely the paperwork — it's finding love, acceptance, and community while carrying grief for everything left behind. Research in Canada consistently shows newcomers and refugees face a higher risk of loneliness and social isolation, and part of the heart often stays tied to people still far away.
Our hearts are heavy for those enduring war in the Middle East and beyond. We hope the world can hold these regions with care, and help those displaced find their way back into safety, dignity, and community. 🤍
