Miche Genest recounts a magical road trip to Charlevoix, retracing family history, and discovering culinary treasures like Quebec’s beloved cretons. The article includes a recipe for this traditional meat spread and onion-blueberry jam.

Cretons: Adapted from a recipe given to me by a Whitehorse friend who grew up in Montreal, and who first introduced me to cretons.

Our Story Written By “Look Inside” Whitehorse Chamber Of Commerce

Chances are, if you’re a resident of the Yukon, or have vacationed here, you’ve picked up a free What's Up Yukon newspaper or visited the website https://whatsupyukon.com/ for a deep dive into what to do, where to eat and most importantly, what makes our Territory just so unique!

What’s Up Yukon started in 2005, and today provides employment to 13 people and paid freelance writing opportunities to hundreds of local writers. The company contributes $140,000 to $160,000 in sponsorships each year, supporting a large number of local non-profit organizations. Impressive, right? We had the pleasure of sitting down with Tammy Beese, owner and self-described “Publisher, Goddess of Chaos”, to better understand how her goal of illustrating “Yukon's living culture” became a reality, and a staple in Yukoner community.

Championing Yukon-Culture and lifestyle was important for Tammy. “Before What’s Up Yukon our culture was about our Gold Rush history which YES is a huge part of who we are, but today we are more than this. We wanted to show our visitors, new Yukoners, and ourselves a reflection of Yukon today. We all know Yukon is beyond special and the publications forever mission is to show us the answers we just couldn't put our finger on before. Why are we a place like no other? What is it that connects us from neighbour to neighbour, community to community?”

What's Up Yukon shows readers how to enjoy the beauty of Yukon landscapes, to celebrate and support our artists, musicians, playwrights, and storytellers, to taste and experiment with local Yukon foods and drinks and to share and enjoy our multicultural society.
