🚨 WPS Launches New Rapid Response Unit to Boost Frontline Support 👮‍♂️🚔

The Winnipeg Police Service officially introduced its new Rapid Response Unit (RRU) today, a dedicated team designed to relieve pressure on frontline officers and improve emergency response times. Set to launch this Sunday, May 3, 2026, the unit is composed of 32 members, including two Sergeants, four Patrol Sergeants, and 26 Constables.

Key Functions of the RRU:

Special Event Management: The RRU will be the primary response team for large public gatherings, including parades, protests, and rallies, allowing general patrol officers to remain available for 911 calls.

Dynamic Deployment: When not at events, the unit will assist with high-demand service periods and conduct proactive crime suppression in neighborhoods facing specific safety concerns.

Operational Support: The team will work seven days a week, moving across the city based on real-time data and requests for assistance from other WPS units.

The unit will make its first public appearance this weekend at the annual WPS Half Marathon, where they will oversee site security and traffic direction. Officials expect the RRU to play a critical role in making police more flexible and responsive to urgent community needs across all districts.

📜 WINNIPEG HISTORY: Men by coal chute, 1900

Check out this gritty look at industrial life in Winnipeg at the turn of the century! 🛠️ This photo captures a group of workers posing next to a massive coal chute.

In an era before easy electricity and natural gas, coal was the lifeblood of the city, powering everything from residential furnaces to massive railway engines. These men had incredibly tough, back-breaking work to keep Winnipeg moving and warm through the long winters.

It really puts into perspective how much technology has changed our daily jobs! What’s the toughest physical labor job you or your family has ever had here in Winnipeg? 👇

🚨 Canada Approves G7’s First Generic Ozempic 💊🇨🇦

Health Canada has officially authorized the first generic version of semaglutide, making Canada the first G7 nation to approve a lower-cost alternative to Ozempic. The approval was granted to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, with several other companies expected to follow suit later this year.

This move is a major win for the millions of Canadians managing Type 2 diabetes. Generic versions typically cost significantly less than brand-name drugs, which currently run around $300 per month out-of-pocket. Beyond affordability, the introduction of a generic is expected to stabilize the supply chain and end the chronic shortages caused by high global demand for weight-loss treatments.

While the brand-name version remains popular, the arrival of generics this summer will provide much-needed relief for both provincial drug plans and patients paying for their own prescriptions.

🚨 Winnipeg Transit Route Changes: Summer & Fall 2026 🚌

Winnipeg Transit is rolling out major updates this year to fix issues with the new "Primary Transit Network." Following heavy feedback from riders and the Downtown BIZ, the city is focusing on making buses more reliable and easier to access in the downtown core.

What’s Changing This Summer (June 21):

Downtown Simplified: To stop buses from being constantly late, long routes are being split. The D16 is being cut into two separate lines (D16 and D18) for better service between Polo Park, Downtown, and Red River College.

Better Medical Access: The D19 terminal is moving to Kennedy Street, putting riders much closer to the Winnipeg Clinic and Graham Avenue.

Late-Night Rides: Service is being pushed past midnight on 10 major routes (including the D10, D14, and D17) to help shift workers and students get home safely.

What’s Coming This Fall (September 6):

Connecting New Areas: Routes like the 48 in Transcona and the 649 in Whyte Ridge are being extended to reach new residential spots and major shopping hubs like Walmart.

Polo Park Tweaks: The FX4 terminal is moving to Portage Avenue to make turns faster and reduce traffic delays.

The city has set aside $18 million to fund these improvements, including adding more buses to the busiest lines to help with overcrowding. You can check the new schedules on the Transit app or Navigo starting in mid-June.

🚨 Dasmesh School Bus Crashes into Tree in Northwest Winnipeg 🚌⚠️

A school bus carrying 27 children crashed into a tree on Forest Cove Drive in northwest Winnipeg early Monday morning. Emergency crews, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene around 8:45 a.m. following reports of the collision.

The bus, which sustained significant front-end damage, belongs to Dasmesh School—a private K-8 school with campuses in West St. Paul and on King Edward Street. Fortunately, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service confirmed that all 27 students and the driver were assessed at the scene, and no one required transport to the hospital.

The Winnipeg Police Service traffic unit is currently investigating the cause of the crash. While the area saw an active emergency presence throughout the morning, no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

🚨 Manitoba Set to Become First Province to Ban Social Media and AI for Youth 📵

Premier Wab Kinew has announced a landmark plan to make Manitoba the first province in Canada to ban children—specifically those aged 16 and under—from using social media and artificial intelligence chatbots. Speaking at a fundraiser in Winnipeg, Kinew argued that these platforms are intentionally designed to "hack" children's brains, contributing to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and online exploitation.

The proposed legislation aims to provide youth "freedom from surveillance capitalism," and unlike similar international laws, it uniquely includes AI chatbots in its scope. While specific enforcement details and timelines are still being finalized, Education Minister Tracy Schmidt suggested that the first phase could roll out within schools, similar to the province’s recent cellphone ban.

The plan follows a national trend of concern regarding online harms, with federal leaders and other provinces closely watching the rollout. Despite the move's popularity with many parents, it faces questions regarding provincial jurisdiction over global tech giants and pushback from some youth who argue that these tools are essential for modern connection and education.

📜 WINNIPEG HISTORY: Main Street, looking north from Portage Avenue 1903

Check out this view looking north from the corner of Portage and Main! 🏛️ By 1903, our city was booming, and you can see the early streetcars sharing the road with horse-drawn carriages.

One of the coolest details here is the massive hand-painted sign for "The Western Canada Loan and Savings Co." on the side of the building. It’s a great look at how downtown Winnipeg became the "Chicago of the North" during this era.

Can you imagine standing at this intersection today compared to back then? It’s a bit different without the concrete barriers! 👇

❄️🚨Major Spring Storm Bringing 50 cm of Snow to Northern Manitoba

A powerful late-season storm is currently sweeping across Manitoba, creating a dramatic weather divide. While the south experiences unseasonably warm temperatures near 22°C, the northern and central regions are bracing for a massive winter comeback that could drop up to 50 cm of snow near Flin Flon, Thompson, and Lynn Lake by Saturday.

The system is expected to begin with a messy mix of freezing rain and ice pellets across central areas like The Pas, where significant ice buildup could threaten power lines and trees. As the cold air moves in, the precipitation will transition to heavy, wet snow accompanied by wind gusts reaching 70 km/h. These conditions will likely lead to whiteouts and impassable roads throughout the northern half of the province.

Environment Canada has issued a series of warnings and winter storm watches, advising residents to prepare for potential utility outages and hazardous travel. While southern Manitoba stays sunny for now, a sharp cold front is expected to bring much cooler temperatures to the entire province by the weekend.

🚨 Winnipeg Council Moves to Strip Coun. Russ Wyatt of Roles

Mayor Scott Gillingham has officially recommended removing Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt from five city committees and boards following sexual assault charges laid against him last month. The Mayor stated the move is necessary to maintain public confidence, noting that while Wyatt is presumed innocent, his continued presence on these boards has become a major distraction at City Hall.

The Details:

Boards Affected: Wyatt would be removed from the Property and Development committee, the Transcona Museum Board, and the Public Library Board, among others.

Continuing Role: He will remain the councillor for Transcona, as the city lacks the legal authority to suspend him from his elected seat.

Wyatt’s Stance: Wyatt denies all allegations and has refused to step down, pledging to continue representing his ward while the matter moves through the courts.

The recommendation will now head to a final vote by the full City Council.
