We are now at a point when technical gaps between console generations are thinner than a 90’s super model. Terra flops this and giggly-bytes that, it’s all the same bull to the an average gamer like myself. I want my mind blown by the story, the music, the gameplay. Not by how bouncy “they are”. (Shout out to Dead or Alive 2 in the early 2000’s though.)
Over the past two decades, gamers have been funneled towards more realistic visuals as a sign of quality. This really started in the PS3/360 era and came to a head in the next generations and now we are at a point of saturation. And frankly, I’m bored. I’m not saying we don’t have any great games with stylised visuals out there, I’m saying we want more of them. We want many more of them.
As I get older and become more impatient, I find myself drawn back to the older generation consoles, re-visiting some games for the nostalgia and discovering the gems that I missed. Last night, while catching up with an old friend whose friendship we built around video games for the most part, I was asked what games I was currently playing. He he quickly made a guess and said I was most likely playing something on Nintendo Switch 2 or PS5. First of all, I’m too broke to buy myself a Nintendo Switch 2 right now okay!? But most importantly, I am bored. So I’m going to reach into my back catalogue of games I always wanted to play but never did. Especially Xbox 360 games, starting with Asura’s Wrath.
