22 June 1985 - Freddie Mercury grants a rare interview with Simon Bates BBC Radio ...

My meeting with Freddie Mercury took place at Queen’s office. He greeted me graciously, making me comfortable and plying me with Earl Grey tea in exquisite china cups. Freddie is very pleasant. He looks like a million dollars.

Every photograph you see of him, he probably doesn’t have any make-up on. It’s him. He looks amazingly fit and amazingly well. We talked about art and he was fascinated with it, and clearly very knowledgeable. He also showed interest in what I liked. He was almost Victorian in his manner, very quiet, extremely polite with the tea and biscuits and chatting, all quite charming, though a little insecure and nervous.

I had a Radio One producer with me, and when it came to the moment to start the actual interview Freddie asked me to be alone instead, so he wouldn't have to talk in front of another stranger. I asked him if there were any areas he’d rather not talk about, and he told me to run through what I wanted to cover, and when I’d finished he said he didn’t want to talk about his family because it was too private. His personal life never came up, and why should it? It had no bearing on his work as a musician.

During the interview Freddie relaxed a bit and revealed a lot about himself. He freely confessed he liked a party and enjoyed life to the fullest. He alsobbelieved there were three of him. One was the professional and hard-working, the second was the party man, and the third liked to be left alone.

22 June 1979, Freddie Mercury writes his amazing, fun loving rockabilly song, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ in the bath and in an impressive 10 minutes at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich, Germany!

Queen began recording their eighth album, ‘The Game’ in June of ‘79. They parted ways with Roy Thomas Baker, and teamed up with Reinhold Mack
at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. They felt Mack was willing to explore more experimental methods of recording as opposed to Roy Thomas Baker's more tried-and-trusted approach.

The first song is Freddie’s huge #1 hit … 💛

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love' took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think." (Freddie Mercury 1981)

Freddie feared that inspiration would escape him as quickly as it had found him, he instructed Roger and John to rush into the studio to cut the song.

Reinhold Mack recalled having everything ready to go in a matter of minutes, and laughed when he noted that Mercury told him they should record the song as quickly as possible, otherwise Brian would "make things take a little longer." 😂

Freddie said, “Everyone loved it, so we recorded it. The finished version sounded like the bathroom version. It’s not typical of my work, but that’s because nothing is typical of my work.”

According to Mack, the song took 6 hours to record.

“I was visiting with Freddie in Munich on one occasion in 1979. He was there with the other Queen members rehearsing somewhere nearby. We were sitting around in his hotel suite in the early evening slowly dragging ourselves together to go to dinner. Freddie went off for a bath but we suddenly heard him shouting: ‘Bring me the tape player - Quick!’ The errand done, he later emerged from the bathroom humming. He sat down and played a few bars on the piano and then on the guitar.

We went off to a Vietnamese restaurant for dinner and then had a drink in a few bars but he was preoccupied the whole time, humming and then singing softly to himself.

By the end of the evening, back at the hotel, he was on the guitar again playing, finally, what was going to be Queen’s next massive hit, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. It was fascinating to be there while he was composing it and even more fascinating later to hear critics’ comments that the song was a remake of an old hit by Elvis, Bill Haley or ‘someone like that.’”

6 July 1980, Queen Live @ Compton Terrace in Chandler, Arizona 🇺🇸 “The Game Tour”

Chandler is a suburb of Phoenix, the city this show is traditionally attributed to. This show was at an ampitheatre, one of the few pre-1986 outdoor shows Queen would play - in the scorching 🥵 desert heat! Phoenix experiences a heat wave in July (it’s considered the hottest month of the year!)

A fans account of the hot evening:

"The fans waited for ages, drinking in the AZ heat, for Queen to come out. The announcer got us all hyped up, the lights dimmed and the audience rushed the stage to see Queen. After the rush I was about 5 or 6 people back from the edge of the stage at right center. Instead of Queen we got the unlisted, unannounced opening act - an in-your-face raw, basic, rockabilly opener. Good at what they did and hand-picked by Queen. But not what the audience was expecting nor came to see. Kind of like Jimi opening for The Monkees... The audience generally was NOT happy. There were lots and LOTS of boos and early in The Blasters' set someone threw a wine bottle right past the lead singer and into the drum set. I remember that clearly. Their opening set was cut short, and Brian May came out and scolded us."

Freddie greets the audience after ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ during which he does a few ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ adlibs.

After ‘Let Me Entertain You,’ he sits down at the piano and offers a marginally clever play on words: "We're gonna play some games with you right now." He then starts the familiar piano intro of Play The Game. These early versions of the song have an extra vocal chorus at the end before Brian improvises over one more cycle.

In the nearly 100 degrees heat, Queen's set was also cut short (presumably Keep Yourself Alive and the solo spots were axed). Freddie is sweating bullets already by Mustapha. He asked, “𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭?!” He sings the intro to the Jazz album track, and replying to the line "Allah I will pray for you.”

Freddie's voice is in superb shape. He does a neat little vocal bit before ‘Save Me,’ reminiscent of Somebody To Love. "I'm coming, I'm coming!" he says part way through, as he's making his way over to Brian at the piano to start the song as he usually does.

6 July 1984, Queen released ‘Is This The World We Created?’ as a B-Side to ‘It’s A Hard Life’ in the USA

“Brian and I were thinking about poverty going on all around the world and that’s why the track “Is This The World We Created” came about. I think for Live Aid we’re actually going to do that as a special thing, right at the end.

It’s very odd, but we composed that particular song well before the Live Aid project, but it seems to fit in quite well. It was about the suffering and starvation of children all over the planet, and it matched the situation so well that we decided it was definitely one song we would do. I tell you, when it comes to that duet, this song is an integral part of what’s going on, and the song seems to convey a lot of what the event is about. I think that’s probably going to bring tears to my eyes when we do it. I’ll have to make sure I do it properly. It’s amazing.

The first line is, “Just look at all those hungry mouths we have to feed.” I can’t believe it. It’s as if someone actually asked us to write a song for this event, but we had one already. Actually, it was Jim Beach’s idea. Because it was there, all written, and that’s why they’ve given us a special spot.

I wouldn’t like to say I wrote all the lyrics, Brian helped, but I remember most of the lyrics of that song are mine, Brian probably did help with a line here and there.”

Freddie Mercury 1984 Interview

This song was written as a last minute replacement for “There Must Be More To Life Than This” which had been written in 1981 and intended for the Hot Space album and again for The Works as the album closer. Freddie was reportedly inspired to write this song after viewing a documentary on television about poverty in Africa.

This song was featured on Live Aid as part of the finale. A stunning performance

6 July 1984, Queen release ‘It’s A Hard life’ in the USA 🇺🇸

“To my mind this is one of the most beautiful songs that Freddie ever wrote. It's straight from the heart, and he really opened up during the creation of it, I sat with him for hours and hours and hours just trying pull it away and get the most out of it. It's one of his loveliest songs."
