The Glasgow New York Transatlantic Connection™ between Optimo and DFA is real, and it goes back to the beginning. The Rapture played at Optimo first, in the summer of 2002, with Keith and Jonnie flying to New York to DJ James’ DFA party at APT later that same year. They’ve played our records, hosted our artists, DJ’d our parties, contributed remixes and records to the DFA catalog, hugged us sweatily into the night, and been more than family ever since.

You may have heard that Keith was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, a terminal brain tumor. A Crowdfunder has been established to help cover the cost of his care with, in true Keith form, any surplus going to benefit the many very real and local causes that the man has supported all of his brilliant career. The struggle of our dear friend has generated a righteous and justified wave of support from people all around the world, and not least from all of the good humans of DFA.

This shirt is our tiny way of trying to raise money for our friend (every bit of profit will go to Keith’s fund) but it’s also an opportunity for us to show love and respect where it’s so truly deserved, with a truth:

No DFA Without Optimo.

For Keith + his family, Jonnie, and all our friends in Glasgow and abroad. We love you very much.

From James: “Eric Broucek was the ur-engineer of the most fertile era of DFA Studios, from about 2003 to 2008 (no one knows anything precisely about that time, as it’s all lost in the fog of chaos). His hand was on all of the remixes, LPs, dance 12s. He was there in that over-designed gear dungeon almost every day, recording, mixing, struggling to not roll his eyes at Tim and me. And somewhere in that fog, he quietly dropped limited runs of three 12-inch delayed reaction bombs on his own label Stickydisc Recordings—two under the name Babytalk, and one as Watussi with another DFA regular, Morgan Wiley.

Back in the day, Eric did not want his music released on DFA. He wanted to forge his own identity, which he did, sending out music that wandered from the DFA path with its uniquely wonky, upended and understated power. His music is so unlike everything else of that era, so profoundly singular, that it still sounds completely out of time.

A few years back, I started DJing the tracks again, and saw how the world was still surprised by what Eric had made, and the idea of this compilation was born.

So, in the end, Eric, we totally got to release your records anyway. We heart you, man.”

Shaking Moving Dancing People: The Stickydisc Records Anthology will be released on double vinyl and digital formats on October 3. It includes all of the tracks from the original twelves plus an unreleased track, “Enough.” Everything was remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service and the vinyl was pressed by Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, VA from lacquers that were cut by Bob. (S**t sounds amazing, tbqh.)

You are now entering the GEAR ZONE. Proceed with reverence.

The Chelsea is based on The One. Not any M**f. The M**f. The one James bought in 1989 and has been the key to the LCD bass fuzz sound on stage and in the studio. Team LCD tried to find another one for years. Total failure. Eventually the geniuses at were able to crack the code and reproduce its magic for everyone. We’ve got a grip in stock and can send them to you in the mail for a reasonable sum. Available on the DFA store - link in bio.

London, we’re coming back in April. And again two more times throughout the year.

Tickets: https://dice.fm/event/ry73ew-dfa-at-moth-vol-1-w-maurice-fulton-jjulius-live-dfa-djs-4th-apr-moth-club-london-tickets

This is the beginning of a new residency at MOTH CLUB , one of our favorite spots in the city because it is small, sweaty, and rich in character. Each night will have both a live act and a headlining DJ. Back to basics and all that stuff.

The first one is on 4 April and we have JJULIUS coming over from Sweden on what will be the back of their incredible new album, Vol. 3, before old DFA pal and mind-shattering producer and DJ Maurice Fulton closes things out.

LISTEN/PRE-ORDER: https://lnk.to/jjulius3

In the discourse around new albums from singular, world-building artists, the phrase “a big step forward” can often be a blinking red warning sign. Inertia is a hell of a thing. It’s nice here. Surely, the party’s not over yet?

JJULIUS’ Vol. 3 is a big step forward, or a step up, out of the murky basement of the preceding two volumes. Inertia be damned, it has charm like a balm. It’s out March 7 and you can stream the radiant “Brinna ut” (featuring Loopsel) everywhere today. Vinyl pre-orders are also live and note that if you buy the record at two of our absolute favorite international shops - World of Echo in London and BIG LOVE in Tokyo - you will receive a special newsprint poster designed by sleeve designer William Jokijärvi Andersson.

If you don’t already, know that DFA owes a not insignificant debt to Liquid Liquid. The music they released on 99 Records across the early to mid-80s is as core to our double helix as New York City and the OCR-A font. To us, they are perfect.

The nerds remember that a DFA-produced, torrentially-fast version of their song “Bellhead” appeared on Compilation 2 back in 2005. It’s an all-timer percussion workout, bursting at the seams with marimba, drums, and bells, like the slacker train sound funk of the original went off the rails.

It’s always felt slightly overlooked on that mammoth comp and deserved a proper 12” release for the hordes that buy those things, but we didn’t really have anything to go with it. Domino had already released a compilation and series of remixes back in 2008, not to mention the work done by Mo’Wax and Grand Royal in the 90s preaching the Liquids gospel.

Then one day the band (amazingly, friends for years! they opened for LCD at MSG!) sent us an instrumental version of Optimo (the DJs’) remix of “Optimo” (the song). It wasn’t released in that collection of Domino remixes for whatever reason, and with the absence of the vocal and the presence of a commanding trumpet solo, it perfectly filled that gap in our dreams.

So here they are: two a-sides from one of our all-time favorite bands in a sleeve designed by Liquids bassist and esteemed graphical artist Richard McGuire, finally on DFA.

“Bellhead / Optimo (Remix)” is out worldwide October 5.

Freya Tate and Moina Moin's malleability and freewheeling spirit won over LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who signed them to DFA Records
