Lighting design that has transformed the church ⛪️
The Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome has received a new lighting system that changes how historic interiors and artworks are experienced. The church was perceived as one continuous space, not as a series of isolated spots that come to life only when a light is switched on. So, the previous lighting system has been removed and replaced with a new one that connects the chapel to the nave and surrounding spaces.
The all-LED system, designed by FABERtechnica Engineering, uses warm white light at 2700K with high colour rendering to preserve the natural tones of the architecture and paintings. Anti-glare optics ensure visual comfort, while a DALI control system allows the lighting to adapt to different uses, including free visits, guided tours, concerts, weddings, and liturgical services. During guided visits, dynamic lighting scenes guide attention across The Calling, The Inspiration, and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, highlighting key parts of each painting without overwhelming the viewer.
