Written by Dr. Kenta Awazu of Sophia University, this article opens the Special Issue: “Reckoning with War’s Legacy: Trauma, Memory, and Pathways to Peace.”

💡It examines how modern Japan has organized the treatment of its war dead, with particular attention to the interplay between symbolic commemoration and the handling of physical remains.

Tracing the historical evolution of these practices, from the early shōkonsha system to the postwar recovery of human remains, the study shows that governing the dead is fundamentally a process of institutionally structuring relationships with the deceased, through which modern states continue to negotiate the legacy of violence.

Led by our Guest Editor Hideaki Shinoda, this Special Issue invites contributions that explore the possibilities for peace in the 21st century through the lens of the “𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴.”

We welcome papers that:

• Examine how geopolitical theories can contribute to new frameworks for peace;
• Engage in constructive discussions on contemporary geopolitical conditions to envision pathways toward peace;
• Critically assess the limitations of anti-geopolitical approaches, including liberal peacebuilding theory, to develop more realistic perspectives on sustainable peace.

People want to hear stories of war.

This is a powerful opening of our newly published article by Chandi Raj Dahal from the Missouri School of Journalism.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with six women who either fought in or witnessed the Nepalese civil war, the study examines how personal experiences of conflict evolve into collective memory. Through thematic and narrative analysis, complemented by research poetry as an arts-based research method, the article explores how these women understand and communicate violence, victory, war, peace, family, and human relationships.

The study offers a compelling perspective on the ways individual stories shape broader societal memories and contribute to our understanding of conflict and peace.
