Why Losing Muscle Mass makes Fat Loss harder
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people focusing only on eating less.
What many people don’t realize is that fat loss isn’t just about losing weight. ⚖️
At the end of the day, it is not the number on the scale that makes us happy, but how we look and feel.
This is where muscle mass plays a crucial role.
What ultimately defines our appearance is our body composition.
That’s why it is so important to protect the muscle mass we already have and, if possible, build more muscle.
When you consistently eat too little protein and don’t do strength training, your body may gradually lose muscle mass over time.
The problem?
Muscle mass plays an important role in your daily calorie expenditure because your muscles are your body’s natural calorie burners.
And at the end of the day, it is your muscles that give your body its shape.
The less muscle mass you have, the fewer calories your body burns, even at rest.
If you eat too little protein and don’t do strength training, you may lose weight on the scale, but you won’t just lose fat. You may also lose a significant amount of muscle mass.
What does that mean?
As your muscle mass decreases, so does your daily calorie expenditure.
The less muscle you have,
the fewer calories you burn throughout the day.
You may continue eating the same way as before, but over time your body becomes more likely to store excess energy as body fat.
This is one of the reasons why many people struggle with long-term weight management and find it harder to maintain their results.
That’s why I always encourage my clients to focus on more than just the number on the scale.
Eat enough protein.
Strength train regularly.
Protect your muscle mass.
Your future self will thank you.
