What did Preprints.org achieve in 2025?

For the first time, we are looking back on a year of growth, innovation, and community in a dedicated Annual Report: https://www.preprints.org/frontend/home/report/2025-annual-report?mtm_campaign=AR25&mtm_source=Facebook

In 2025, we reached several important milestones:
- 31,691 preprints posted, marking the first time the platform exceeded 30,000 preprints in a single year
- 100,000 total posted preprints milestone reached in June 2025
- 39,859 new authors shared their research output on the platform
- 5.8 million views on Preprints.org and 9.7 million downloads across the web
- 57.3% of preprints later published in journals

2025 also brought new platform enhancements for authors and readers, including redesigned article pages and Reading Lists, as well as improved submission workflows and enhanced screening procedures in the AI era.

In May 2016, the first preprint went live on Preprints.org.

Ten years later, it has grown into a global preprint server supporting more than 400,000 researchers worldwide.

Looking back on this journey, we are excited to have Alistair Freeland, Chief Operating Officer at MDPI and one of the first members of the Preprints.org team, share his reflections on the platform’s development.
