🕰️ A clock almost unique in Europe, whose tick-tock has echoed for 500 years. 🇨🇭

The Zytglogge, a tower in the heart of Bern’s old town, houses one of Europe’s rare astronomical clocks that is still fully mechanical and in working order. Unlike other similar feats of engineering still in operation, this clock functions exactly as it did at its inauguration in 1530. ⌛

Every day, one person cranks the handle that lifts the weights supplying the energy needed to power the mechanism. The clock must be wound at least every 27 hours. ⚙️

The result: a unique mechanical heart that animates many elements, such as the procession of armored bears circling as many times as the hour, and the rooster that flaps its wings and crows. 🐻

But how did this clock come to be? At the beginning of the 16th century, Bern sought to display its wealth and to emphasize its break with the Catholic Church, which had held a near-monopoly over the clocks that regulated daily life. The city therefore decided to commission the construction of a new astronomical clock from the clockmaker Kaspar Brunner.
