🇬🇧 The haunted orchid that fell off the heater live on camera? She survived! 👻🪴

After a few days, we went back home to check on our beloved plants, especially on the Brassocattelya Amethyst we caught falling on camera 😂

She was wrapped in a transparent plastic bag because we were testing the amount of days the humidity could last inside... and it actually worked pretty well! The plant is mounted on cork with a sphagnum moss medium, and it was still pretty humid. Thankfully, the plant fell upside down and nothing broke!

Anyway, this event gives us the chance to introduce the conversation about prepping our plants for holiday travel. Vacation plant care is a hot topic, we know! But we test very different solutions every year, and believe us, we’ve lost very few plants so far 😏

This year especially, since we added very demanding plants to our collection, we are risking it all to test and understand their needs while going on holidays, as we all deserve 😮‍💨

This is how we like to style our Vandas in our home. Such beautiful yet demanding orchids require a specific display, both to blend into our aesthetic and to make it easy to take them on and off for watering basically every day! 💦

“𝑂𝑛𝑒 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐴𝑡 𝐴 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒”

Plant no. 005 - 𝑵𝒆𝒐𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒍𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒂 (Vanda falcata)

🇬🇧 Fifth in our series is the legendary Neofinetia falcata, the “Wind Orchid” (Fuuran). Steeped in history, it holds the distinction of being the first orchid ever grown as a houseplant in 1600s Japan. Known as the “Samurai Orchid,” rare specimens were once reserved for the ruling elite, who would sometimes trade entire estates for a single plant. Unlike most orchids, it is highly collected for its structural, year-round foliage, spanning over 2,200 varieties.

🔬 Taxonomic Profile
- Family: Orchidaceae
- Genus: Neofinetia (syn. Vanda)
- Species: N. falcata

🌿 Morphology
An epiphytic orchid native to Japan, China, and Korea, characterized by a compact, fan-shaped growth habit. The thick, leathery leaves vary from 2cm dwarfs to large variegated forms. In summer, it produces spurred, pure white blooms that release a sweet, jasmine-like fragrance, peaking at dusk and dawn.

🪴 General cultivation info:
- Light: High-intensity indirect light; thrives near South-facing windows or under modern LED grow lights.
- Moisture & Water: Keep consistently moist from May to September using low-alkalinity water (RO or rainwater). Water in the morning to prevent crown rot.
- Temperature & Rest: Incredibly resilient (0°C to 38°C). Requires a strict cool winter rest (around 10°C–15°C) from October to April with minimal water to trigger summer blooms. Stop fertilizing in September and repot annually in March.

🇬🇧 Yesterday, while wandering through a greenhouse, I got so distracted that, for the first time ever, I pricked myself on a cactus.

When I stopped to look at it, I realized not only how fascinating it was, but also that it was the last specimen of its kind available. I glanced at the label and read: Opuntia Santa Rita.

Yesterday marked two months since my grandmother Rita passed away, and ever since then I’ve found myself looking for signs everywhere.

The Opuntia gosseliniana var. Santa Rita, Native to the deserts of the American Southwest and northern Mexico, is known for its striking colors. It produces beautiful yellow flowers, often with reddish centers, and under strong sunlight, cool temperatures, or periods of drought, its pads develop a remarkable purple-magenta hue.

There isn’t much more to say, just welcome home Opuntia Santa Rita.

🇮🇹 Ieri, mentre passeggiavamo in una serra, mi sono distratto così tanto che, per la prima volta, mi sono punto con un cactus.

Quando mi sono girato a guardarlo, mi sono reso conto non solo di quanto fosse affascinante, ma anche che era l’ultimo esemplare disponibile della sua specie. Ho dato un’occhiata all’etichetta: Opuntia Santa Rita.

Ieri ricorrevano due mesi dalla scomparsa di mia nonna Rita e, da allora, cerco segni un po’ ovunque.

L’Opuntia gosseliniana var. Santa Rita, originaria dei deserti del Sud-Ovest degli Stati Uniti e del nord del Messico, è conosciuta per i suoi colori straordinari. Produce splendidi fiori gialli, spesso con il centro rossastro, e sotto una forte esposizione al sole, con temperature più fresche o durante periodi di siccità, le sue pale assumono una sorprendente tonalità viola-magenta.

Non c’è molto da dire, se non: benvenuta a casa Opuntia Santa Rita.

🇮🇹 Siete mai stati in una foresta tropicale... nel nord Italia?

Abbiamo preso il treno diretti a Comerio (VA) con una scusa speciale: la 10ª edizione di ComeRaro, la mostra mercato di piante insolite e rare. Ma l’obiettivo principale era svelare un segreto botanico affacciato sulla splendida Terrazza Belvedere.

Siamo entrati nel mondo di , un’associazione no-profit guidata dal presidente Riccardo che ha compiuto un vero miracolo: salvare dall’abbandono una splendida serra dell’Ottocento (un tempo appartenente a una storica villa nobiliare) e trasformarla in un laboratorio scientifico vivente! 🧪✨

Le chicche pazzesche che abbiamo scoperto durante la visita guidata:

- È una serra fredda (non riscaldata): le piante vengono acclimatate per resistere a temperature vicine allo zero 🥶
- La gestione è manuale e le piante vengono irrigate sfruttando l’acqua di una sorgente naturale del Campo dei Fiori, proprio come si faceva nell’800 💧
- Ospita oltre 500 specie esotiche e botaniche rare provenienti da ben 4 continenti 🌍

Un ponte pazzesco tra storia, biodiversità e partecipazione civica a due passi da Varese.

🇮🇹 Un angolo di tropici... in Svizzera! 🌴🇨🇭 Siamo stati in visita alle Isole di Brissago!

Siamo partiti in treno verso Locarno, abbiamo fatto tappa a Ascona e poi ci siamo imbarcati sul Lago Maggiore alla volta di questo paradiso.

Le Isole di Brissago nascondono un microclima unico e una storia pazzesca: dalla visione della Baronessa St. Léger nel 1885, fino al sfarzo di Max Emden. Oggi l’Isola Grande ospita un Giardino Botanico con oltre 2.000 specie subtropicali provenienti dalle 5 regioni a clima mediterraneo del mondo.

La nostra parte preferita? Decisamente la serra delle orchidee! 🌸

We took a train to Locarno, stopped by the town of Ascona, and hopped on a boat across Lake Maggiore to reach this hidden gem.

The Brissago Islands enjoy a unique microclimate and a fascinating history: from the vision of Baroness St. Léger in 1885 to the luxury of Max Emden. Today, the Main Island is a Botanical Garden featuring over 2,000 subtropical species from the world’s 5 Mediterranean climate regions.

Our favorite spot? Definitely the orchid greenhouse! 🌸

🇬🇧 Our house mascot, the rescued Monstera Deliciosa, needed a repot to properly display her beauty! 🪴

We took this chance to abandon moss poles and convert to natural branches, which will help shape the design of our indoor jungle.

Honestly, we were having too many annoying issues managing moss poles around the house and wanted to minimize the stress. Our Monsteras were already pushing aerial roots outside the poles, so making the switch to natural wood just made sense for our space.

🇮🇹 La nostra mascotte di casa, questa Monstera Deliciosa salvata dalla strada, aveva proprio bisogno di un rinvaso per mostrare tutta la sua bellezza! 🪴

Abbiamo colto l’occasione per dire addio ai pali di muschio e passare a dei rami naturali, che daranno forma al design della nostra giungla domestica.

Sinceramente, gestire i moss pole per tutta casa stava diventando troppo stressante e volevamo semplificarci la vita. Le nostre Monstera stavano già facendo radici aeree ovunque fuori dal palo, quindi il passaggio al legno naturale è stato la scelta più logica per la nostra casa.

🇬🇧 Fourth in our series is the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii ‘inermis’ f. cristata, a captivating sculptural marvel. This cactus trades traditional symmetry for a rolling, fan-like architecture.

🔬 Taxonomy
- Family: Cactaceae
- Genus: Gymnocalycium
- Species: G. mihanovichii
- Cultivar/Form: ‘inermis’ forma cristata (Crested and spineless form)

🌿 Morphology
While the typical species is native to the Chaco region of South America, this specific form is a rare horticultural mutation. The designation ‘inermis’ means “unarmed,” highlighting its lack of the sharp spines typical of the genus. The f. cristata (crested) mutation occurs when the growing tip expands laterally rather than circularly, forcing the plant to grow in an intricate, wavy ridge that resembles a green velvet brain or a coral reef. Its skin displays a rich, deep olive to bronze-green hue with subtle banding. The Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii Inermis Cristata is often grafted onto other cacti to encourage growth, but it can also be cultivated on its own roots with patience.

🪴 General cultivation info:
- Light: Bright, indirect light to partial sun (intense afternoon sun should be avoided to prevent scorching).
- Substrate: Mineral-heavy, extremely gritty cactus mix with excellent drainage.
- Watering: Strict “soak and dry” method; allow the substrate to dry out entirely between waterings and keep near-dry during winter dormancy.
