🌍 [AFP] On July 23, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an opinion considered historic. It recognizes that states have obligations to achieve results in the face of the “urgent and existential threat” of climate change. It also states that their failures to do so are “wrongful”. This paves the way for claims for reparations.

On July 23, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) recognized that states have obligations to achieve results in the face of climate change. That their failures to do so are “wrongful”. And that claims for reparations are possible.

"Afghanistan is fading from the public memory around the world while the Taliban are being normalized despite their brutal policies."

- Shaharzad Akbar (executive director of Rawadari)

"The arrest warrants are unlikely to turn the Taliban Supreme Leader into a liability in the current climate, but if the internal politics and dynamics within the group shift, it can become another leverage for pressure/contention within the senior Taliban leadership."

🇱🇾 [AFP] - Will the International Criminal Court (ICC) have better luck this time around in the Libyan case? On July 18, it announced the arrest in Germany, two days earlier, of a Libyan suspect who was the subject of a secret arrest warrant. Last January, the ICC suffered a major setback when Italian authorities sent back to his country another Libyan suspect who had been arrested on Italian soil at the request of the Court.

🇦🇫 [opinion] - Judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have allowed arrest warrants against two top leaders of the Taliban in Afghanistan on July 8. Their value is essentially symbolic, acknowledges human rights activist Shaharzad Akbar. But it contributes to help other justice efforts while the Taliban are being normalized.

"This is the merit at least of the ICC announcement, symbolic as it is, to keep gender apartheid in Afghanistan under the spotlight."

[podcast] 🎧 - On July 23, the International Court of Justice will deliver an advisory opinion on the legal obligations of polluting states to combat climate change and protect the countries and the communities most affected. Over 100 nations and international organisations had addressed the judges in the Hague last December. Our partners at Asymmetrical Haircuts give a prep class before a ruling that carries high expectations and high stakes. What were the arguments made before the Court? Their three guests are Nikki Reisch, the Director of the Climate & Energy Program at the Center for International Environmental Law in California, Vishal Prashad, the Campaign Director of the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, Brenda Reson Sapuro of the World’s Youth for Climate Justice, and documentarian Felix Golenko.
