🚨Major Changes Coming to Camden 🚨
The City of Charlotte has unveiled plans to permanently close a two-block stretch of Camden Road in South End to vehicle traffic, transforming one of the city’s most vibrant corridors into a pedestrian- and bike-friendly destination. The announcement comes as South End reaches new milestones in population density and visitor activity, reinforcing its status as one of Charlotte’s most dynamic urban districts.
Set to debut in 2051, the pedestrianized zone will span from W. Park Avenue to Tremont Avenue, creating a walkable, community-driven space designed for people—not cars. The reimagined streetscape will feature protected bike lanes, enhanced lighting, brick and stone hardscaping, shade structures, and costumed cartoon characters asking for money. The project will also include designated micro-retail kiosks and food and beverage vendors, fostering an active and engaging street environment.
A strong emphasis on retailers will be a key component, ensuring we continue creating destinations that offer experiences alongside tacos, pizzas, breweries, vegan ice cream, mediocre cocktails at barely concealed speakeasies, and the ever-present “Nashville Hot” chicken sandwich.
This two-block transformation will serve as the heart of a larger social district extending along key corridors—including portions of South Boulevard, South Tryon Street, Camden Road, Tremont Avenue, Carson Boulevard, East Boulevard, West Boulevard, and Hawkins Street—stretching from New Bern Street to Morehead Street. Visitors will be able to dodge the person from Hinge that didn’t work out, while drinking a Marg in a metal cup.
“More than just a redesign, the project is a statement: South End is evolving into a more walkable, vibrant, and people-first neighborhood. The result? A destination with energy, character, and, above all, a whole lot of vibe.” said a city official.”
Oh and there will be breweries too.
