Last November 11, the children in Stalden took part in the traditional Laternenumzug, a beautiful lantern parade that takes place every autumn in many parts of Switzerland.
During this tradition, children walk through the village in the evening carrying hand-made lanterns and singing lantern songs. The idea comes from the story of St. Martin, who shared his cloak with a poor man — the lanterns symbolize bringing light, kindness, and warmth into the darker season. It’s also connected to old harvest traditions, where lanterns made from turnips were used to celebrate the end of the harvest.
This small parade creates a wonderful feeling of community, light, and togetherness, and it’s always a joy to see the glowing lanterns and happy faces.
