When a new technology emerges, this is what you must do...
__"If you do not know where you want to go, it does not matter what path you take..."
The first time I heard about the Internet must have been at least five years before it became a topic of public discussion in places like newspapers. It was certainly the same with mobile phones.
1.
Entrepreneurs amongst you: get in early! I determined to understand how it really worked. Soon, it became a passion of mine. Like some guys do football, I couldn’t learn enough. I wanted to know all about the ways entrepreneurs were getting involved.
2.
It really matters who you are listening to. If you are an entrepreneur, listen to entrepreneurs. I remember going to Germany to meet with some young entrepreneurs [like I was at the time] with whom I was corresponding. These guys taught me how to set up “dot com” businesses of all kinds, and it was really cool.
Although when back home, I was busy pushing my mobile business by day, at night... I was studying the Internet and its impact!
3.
Be practical in your thinking and actions! Learn enough to try something. I remember setting up my first Internet business, which was a kind of Skype, because I was a “telephone guy” and wanted to stay close to my competencies. Where are you now, and where do you want to go? What do you need to do to get there?
4.
Knowledge opens opportunities. It was not long before word got out that this was an area in which I was rapidly accumulating knowledge and deep understanding: Opportunities began to flood in!
Many of them I could not do, but I looked for those things that used to be ”what was in my hand”. I wanted something , and me! My own gig!
It was time.
First, I had a vision, and then it became an insight, in that order. Vision with no insight is daydreaming. You have got to have a clear line of sight to what you intend to do, and that is why you need to draft a Business Plan.
5.
Start small! I started the company that is now Liquid Intelligent Technologies with just four people. Today, it has more than 5,000 in over 30 countries.
Although I can have a Big Vision about what I intend to do, I have the humility to start small. Do something to get you started, even if it is polishing shoes! Don’t make perfect the enemy of good... always waiting for things to come right before you start.
This AI stuff is the biggest opportunity you are going to see, but unless you understand these five steps, you are going to be a user and a customer of some great new products and services, but not the entrepreneur. But heyy... That’s okay, too!
Where do YOU want to go? What do you need to do to get there?
I trust you are all busy . Please share your own AI learning resources and experiences with others here on the platform.
