The Travelling Sloth Hi, I'm Caroline. A 30-something yr old on a mission to explore different countries, cultures and collect experiences.

šŸ‡øšŸ‡¬šŸ‡³šŸ‡“ millennial
ā˜•ļøCaffeine fueled backpacker documenting my adventures.
šŸ—ŗļø 73 / 197 countries, all 7 continents
šŸŒHelping you plan better adventures through story telling, pocket guides, itineraries and photographs. I am currently based out of Europe but my bags are always packed, ready for an adventure somewhere. Most of my travels these days are with my husband, however you can still find me on a

solo side quest somewhere in the world, on the mountain tops or under the sea. The focus of The Travelling Sloth is budget conscious travel as told through personal experiences and inspiring everyone to get out and explore the world. For my 2025 mission, it will be to explore new countries and focus on cultural experiences as well as wildlife conservation experiences. Buckle up, 2025 is gonna be an amazing year!

My little version of my Travel Wrap for 2025.

It’s been an unreal year so far, I truly can’t believe all the things I’ve gotten up to! It’s been fun, chaotic, full of laughter, animal encounters and an adventure that will last a few lifetimes.

I actually started in Georgia + Armenia - which were the first countries I visited after being unemployed amidst the chaos of packing up my house 🤪 and then mid April, and I set off for the African continent for 5 months, a quick pit stop in Europe before continuing to South America for the foreseeable future.

Obviously visiting all 7 continents was a pretty nice addition to our insane gap year/career break! But all the wildlife experiences we’ve had this year will be so hard to top.

We are insanely privileged to have this year off and into the next… I’m excited to see what happens in 2026! šŸŽ‰

Fangirling over one of my favourite views over the last 3 months in South America. šŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸ¤©šŸ”ļø

Shame I couldn’t hike all the way to the laguna BUT I found a beautiful hiking route to enjoy it as much as I could. Don’t worry, I’m busy writing it for my fellow members. You can still enjoy these views without completely wrecking your knee.

āœļø Take note… this might be the new Bonito šŸ‘€

If you’re researching hidden gems in Brazil… and I mean actual hidden gems - then Bom Jardim (Mato Grosso) deserves a spot on your radar.

Would you believe I’ve never been to Rio, SĆ£o Paulo or the Amazon but I’ve travelled deep into Mato Grosso state instead 😬

We came for the Pantanal, and our Airbnb host ( ) tipped us off about Bom Jardim, a small village known for crystal-clear rivers, flutuação (river floating) and macaws.

What surprised me most?
We were the only foreigners there 🤣 heavily abusing our Translator app and my Portuguese/Spanish mix. But there’s only local crowds, no tour buses, just slow travel, nature and some of the clearest water I’ve ever seen.

If you’re planning a Brazil itinerary beyond the obvious, looking for places like Bonito but less touristy or travelling through Mato Grosso, quietly add Bom Jardim to your list before the secret’s out šŸ˜‰

If you want to support me, you can vote for my photos in the Refocus Awards’ People’s Vote… it’s free and you can vote (for as many images) once a day for the next 11 days. It would genuinely mean so much to me! šŸ’›

From leaving my job to being nominated for a photography award… eckkk! Little ol’ me?! who would’ve thought?!

This time last year I was behind a desk wondering what on earth I was doing with my life. šŸ˜… Fast forward to this year: we quit our jobs, took a massive risk, travelled full-time and for the first time since I was a teen, I actually had the opportunity to take photography seriously.

I entered a few images ā€œjust to see what happensā€ā€¦ and somehow four of them have been nominated for the People’s Vote. I’m still flabbergasted. To see my photos recognised alongside so many incredible photographers feels surreal… like maybe this big leap we took is actually starting to pay off.

A little backstory behind each photo:

1 + 2: King Penguins in South Georgia
The moment that changed everything for me. Standing in front of hundreds of thousands of king penguins… it pretty much confirmed that wildlife photography is what I want to be doing with my life.

3: Chimpanzee in Kibale NP, Uganda
I spent five hours observing chimps during a habituation experience. Their expressions, interactions, even the drama — it was one of the most grounding wildlife encounters I’ve ever had.

4: Royal Drummers of Gishora, Burundi
The whole reason I wanted to go to Burundi. Their performance wasn’t just entertainment — it was history, culture, power, joy. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Thanks so much for the support, it honestly means the world.

Peace, Love + Good Vibes. šŸ’›šŸŒ

INTERNATIONAL J A G U A R DAY

Probably the sighting of my life… okay well, that could be said for so many different animal sightings I’ve had this past year. I’m breaking my Antarctic posts to share this incredible sighting on international jaguar day…. To help raise some awareness of these beautiful creatures- they are honestly just pure muscle šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ šŸ†

They’re the biggest cat of the Americas and the threat they face is still very real. From habitat loss (caused by farming or wild fires) to illegal wildlife trade to the killing of them by farmers to protect livestock… all this puts pressure on the survival of the jaguar.

In parts of the Americas, to the indigenous, they are symbolic in the spiritual world. Which if you’ve looked at some cultures, they do have a lot of jaguar motifs, artwork and folklore.

Beyond the cultural importance, they play a vital role in the ecosystem. So we need to protect them! A small part of what we can do as individuals is to not participate in the purchase of them in the form of ā€œtraditional medicineā€, visit them in their natural habitat (ie Pantanal, Brazil) with ethical tour guides.

There’s also a documentary you can watch on YouTube which looks into the illegal trade of jaguars in Bolivia: Jaguar Spirit, Secrets revealed about the illegal trade.

This isn’t just our planet, it is theirs too.

Things I wish I’d known before going to Antarctica 🧊🐧

These are the little things no one tells you until you’re already halfway to the White Continent.

If you’re planning (or dreaming of) a trip of a lifetime … you might wanna save this one for later šŸ¤

šŸ‘‰ What’s something you wish you knew before going somewhere? Or what do you wanna know about Antarctica?

3 penguins walk into a bar……

I got nothing so hit me with your best punchline joke for this šŸ˜‚

Here’s what chatgpt came up with so whatever do you WILL be better, no doubt:
Three penguins walk into a bar.
Bartender says, ā€œCold day, huh?ā€
One penguin replies, ā€œMate, if you think this is cold, you should see where we pregame.ā€

🄁 šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø it was not great and the other options were prettttty bad 🤣

If and I were penguins, this would probably be us šŸ˜‚šŸ§

Found some chinstrap penguins and I thought King Penguins were my favourite but watching how clumsy these little guys are is pretty entertaining so they might have bumped themselves up the list 🫣🤭

We’ve had some fantastic continental landings so far, looking forward to what the next couple of days has in store for us. šŸ‡¦šŸ‡¶

And to top it off, it was a continental landing ✨🐧🄰 how magical and lucky are we to have the opportunity to experience this 🤯

Rockhopper Penguins - Falkland Islands šŸ‡«šŸ‡°

Now you cannot look at these photos and tell me that these rock hoppers aren’t divas or at least dramatic because they 10% are!

We watched them start building their nests for mating season but there was so much drama going on - we even witnessed a fight break out between two rock hoppers (because one was trying to steal the other’s nest šŸ‘€ šŸæ)

🐧 Follow for more wildlife drama because I’ve got plenty more to share!

Have you ever seen a flying penguin? Well, enjoy this series of swimming - I mean flying - King Penguins to improve your Sunday 🤣

Couldn’t possibly try posting these photos in portrait … it wouldn’t do it any justice! I don’t want to even tell you how many photos I took while attempting to get a flying penguin 🫣 it’s a wee bit embarrassing.

But I’m so happy with these photos and I hope it makes you a bit happier too šŸ™‚šŸ§
