Santa Village Unites to Relaunch Development Drive After Years of Crisis.

The Santa Village Development and Cultural Association (Savideca) has held its first major gathering in years at the Santa Fon’s Palace. The meeting brought together members of the traditional council, quarter heads, youth representatives, and local elites.

Savideca activities had been halted following the outbreak of the North West crisis, which scattered communities and heightened insecurity. Today’s meeting marks what members describe as a new chapter, with renewed commitment to the development of Santa Village.

Santa, strategically located at the gateway to the Northwest Region of Cameroon just after Babajou from the West Region, is a subdivision comprising 13 villages. These villages, including Santa, Mbei, Akum,Baligham, Njong, Pinyin, Awing, and others, thrive primarily on agriculture and farming. Despite its economic potential, Santa has remained underdeveloped for decades.

This stagnation is largely attributed to divisive politics. Instead of fostering unity and growth, political actors have turned Santa into a playground for their interests. They have sown seeds of discord, ensuring that the villages under Santa Subdivision remain fragmented. Debates fueled by these divisions such as whether Santa is a village or merely a subdivision are distractions from the real issues. For context, Yaoundé, Babajou, Mbengwi, Bali, and Batibo are all subdivisions, yet their status has not hindered their development or unity.

Moreover, some administrators, rather than serving as neutral leaders for peace and progress, have compromised their roles, acting as instruments of partisan agendas. This has manifested in actions such as the creation of artificial boundaries and illegitimate chieftaincies. It is essential to remember that, according to the customs and traditions of the Northwest Region, chieftaincy is hereditary and should not be manipulated for political gain.

The recent subdivision of smaller communities, such as turning multiple quarters in Mbei into separate villages, may appear beneficial in the short term. However, this strategy ultimately deepens divisions and weakens Santa’s collective strength.

To the children of Santa: open your eyes. The forces that fear your unity are working tirelessly to keep you divided. A united Santa is a strong Santa, and only through solidarity can the subdivision reclaim its rightful path to peace and development.

Together we Stand, Divided we fall.

In recent times, sports have emerged as a powerful instrument for fostering peace and social cohesion, particularly in Santa. Just as the Samba Annual Dance serves as a cultural bridge uniting the villages of Santa, football and handball have also proven to be vital tools in strengthening unity and harmony across the subdivision.

Thanks to the dedication of organizations such as Scores, the Soshi Congress, and the veterans of Santa, initiatives like the Clash of Kingdoms tournament have created platforms where communities can set aside their differences and celebrate their shared identity. Through these sporting events, Santa continues to demonstrate that when we come together on the field, we build more than just teams we build lasting peace and solidarity.

The recent ministerial decree upgrading Mbei from a 3rd Class to a 2nd Class Chiefdom has ignited tension across Santa Sub-Division, with traditional rulers and residents questioning both the process and the legitimacy of the decision.

𝐀 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐲

Signed on July 24, 2025, by the Minister of Territorial Administration, the order (No.000285/O/MINAT) grants Mbei jurisdiction over four quarters in Mbei as 3rd Class chiefdoms and Mbei as 2nd Class and redefines its boundaries citing the Bafoussam–Bamenda Highway as an eastern border.

This move has drawn sharp criticism from Santa’s chiefs, who allege they were never consulted, contrary to the spirit of Decree No.77/245 of 15 July 1977, which governs traditional chieftaincies in Cameroon.

𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚: “𝐍𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞, 𝐍𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭”

Chiefs and community leaders say the decision was made without any consultative talks with the traditional council of Santa Sub-Division.

𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞: 𝐀 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫?

The decree controversially lists the Bafoussam–Bamenda Highway as a boundary. Traditionally, highways do not serve as natural or customary demarcations between chiefdoms. This raises concerns over artificial boundaries that could fuel territorial disputes.

Under Article 2, the new Mbei 2nd Class Chiefdom is given authority over (Quaters) Megu-Nghi, Membe-Ngwei, Tarrembung, Mefa’ah, and Mufumtchom.
Locals question when and how these communities consented to become villages.

While the Minister legally holds discretionary power to reclassify chiefdoms, the lack of dialogue and opaque process surrounding this decision has fueled accusations of abuse of power and disregard for tradition.

Santa’s chiefs are now weighing options, including formal petitions and legal challenges, to contest what they view as an unprocedural and divisive move.

This investigation will continue as more facts emerge.
