High Blood Pressure – The Silent killer
Let’s talk about something that is silently affecting millions of people in our communities, yet many don’t even know they have it — high blood pressure
You see, back in the day, our parents would walk to the farm, fetch water from the stream, eat what they harvested, and sleep early. Today? We wake up, rush to work, sit for hours, eat fast food, sleep late with our phones in hand — and somehow expect our hearts to behave. 😅
That lifestyle shift has come with a price. One of them? Hypertension.
So, What Exactly Is High Blood Pressure?
Your heart is a pump — it pumps blood through tubes (blood vessels) to deliver oxygen and nutrients around your body. The pressure it uses to push that blood is what we call blood pressure.
Now imagine this: when that pressure becomes too high, it starts stressing your blood vessels, your heart, and even your kidneys. That’s what we call high blood pressure or hypertension.
The dangerous part? Most people with it feel nothing. No pain. No sign. That’s why it’s often called the "silent killer."
⚠️ Numbers to Know:
A normal blood pressure is usually around 120/80 mmHg
140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high blood pressure
But let’s be honest — how many of us even know our numbers? When last did you check?
😮 “But I Feel Fine!” Doesn’t Mean You’re Fine.
One of my uncles in Bamenda was always laughing, drinking his palm wine, never complained of anything. Until one day — boom — he collapsed. By the time he got to the hospital, they said it was stroke caused by high blood pressure. He never knew he had it. That’s how silent and deadly it can be.
Our parents:
Walked long distances 🚶🏽♀️
Ate unprocessed food 🍠🍃
Slept early 🛏️
Us today:
Drive everywhere, even to buy airtime 😂
Eat noodles, fried meat, suya and sugary drinks 🥤
Sleep by 2 AM after scrolling TikTok 📱
This shift has made high blood pressure more common in even young people — people in their 20s and 30s are now on BP medication!
This Week, Let’s Break It Down Together
We’ll be talking about:
Causes of high blood pressure — not just salt and stress, but also our habits.
The damage it does to your body — from stroke to kidney failure.
How to prevent and manage it naturally — without waiting for it to strike first.
Taking action — why checking your BP might just save your life.
🫀 If your heart could talk, what would it say about your lifestyle?
This week, let's listen closely.
Tag someone you care about. Let’s learn and fight this silent killer together. ❤️
