The Secretary-General of the North West House of Chiefs of the North West Regional Assembly, His Royal Majesty Fon Ndofoa Zofoa III of Babungo, has been decorated with the Knight of the Order of Valor medal by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya on May 20th 2026 on Bamenda.

This high national distinction stands as a testament to a leader whose profound impact is felt far and wide.

​Following the ceremony, the Governor of the North West Region, the President of the North West Regional Assembly, and the President of the North West House of Chiefs, accompanied by a delegation of North West Fons and administrative authorities, visited the residence of His Royal Majesty Fon Ndofoa Zofoa III to celebrate this well-deserved national recognition.

𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘄𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗣𝗵.𝗗, 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻.

Renowned human rights defender and Vice President of the General Assembly of the Cameroon Bar Association, Barrister Edward Ewule Lyonga, officially earned a Ph.D. in Law after defending a thesis that strongly advocates for the abolition of the death penalty in Cameroon. He successfully defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Buea's Faculty of Laws and Political Science. The defense was chaired by Professor Sone Patience Munge.

His advocacy brings attention to the approximately 220 inmates currently languishing on death row in Cameroon. He uses his academic achievement and legal platform to actively call on the Cameroonian state to officially abolish capital punishment.

While Cameroon is currently considered a de facto abolitionist state—with no official executions carried out since 1997—the death penalty still remains on the books, most notably in the revised 2016 Criminal Code.
