October election: 80 "candidates"

The huge number of persons who have made "declared intentions" to stand for the Presidential election in October are not yet candidates per se.
We shall count the candidates for the election after the Constitutional Council will publish their list. By then it will be a list of those who gave the expected documents including a receipt of payment of 30 million cfaf in the State treasury.
Those ones so selected would have paid the fee, knowing that they can only be refunded the money if they get at least 10 percent of the votes.
In 2018 only Paul Biya and Maurice Kamto got the percentage and were rei.bursed their registration fee.
This means that any of those "jokers" on the list of "declared" candidtaes simply gave ELECAM unnecessary work. One of them told journalists how they will give their 10,000 votes to Paul Biya, barely minutes after visiting the ELECAM office. Another one from the Cpdm party sent his documents through the post office. Others notably came up to declare their intentions as a way to challenge their party hierarchy as we saw in the MANIDEM and the FSNC.
We therefore wait with patience.

Money and politics: the presidential election in Cameroon.

Those who conceived the law putting the registration fee for presidential elections at 30 million explained that it was meant to keep out adventurers. Thirty million is quite a big sum of money, however, the fact that the money is refunded if the candidate is rejected makes presidential elections a joke in Cameroon.
One of those who have paid the money promised "to build hospitals every 50km along the roads". Then Papillon, a good music professional came to try his luck in the October election. These are signs that we are going downwards.
That law should be changed such that we do not get surprise candidates for the very important post of President of the Republic.
The idea of a candidate being presented by a political party is good. That way the party must have MPs and Mayors no matter the number. That will mean that some consensus has been reached at the base.
There is no logic in asking for registration fee to later hand huge sums of money for camoaign. Scammers or jokers take it as investment. 30 million may fetch 100, who knows, and the deal is done.
Anyway, the way ahead is bright.

How come you said "my names are"?
Even if you are called John Mary Subu, it is one name. Somebody had the courage to say so in Lamnso. Funny.

Election count down: the risk of tribe.

Before we knew it, some people came out with the tribe disease that knows no democracy. It is a legitimate right to want a better life, to ask for a fair share in the nation's resources.
The danger is to want political power as a tribe in a country of many tribes. The fear in such circumstance is that when you do not get it you feel ostracized and your tribesmen as well. Second, the bitterness in such frustration is too delicate as any spark may burn down the village.
Statements such as "we the nordists are tired of waiting", "we the Beti have been dominated for too long by the Bulu", "we of the East will not let this chance pass by", "Anglophones must have a President this time"etc etc have been heard here and there as we await the October election.
Democracy means equal chances and equal rights. Unfortunately, the famous "government by the people, for the people" has lost its meaning in Cameroon where the majority only enjoy that one-day act of voting. They are not asking how they contribute to the making of laws, how they contribute to the setting up of the budget, how they contribute to decisions about infrastructure development and so on.
It is therefore time to behave differently. The decentralisation programme is an opening for effective democracy where the importance of the people who hold sovereignty can be felt.
Elswhere loval elections mean much to citizens than the election of the Head of State whose main task is diplomacy. In the USA, you may be surprised that a citizen in Atlanta has never gone to Washington, or bothered about the President's activities, except maybe when their security is threatened. They worry about their mayor who must render account and work for public good. That way, the mayor ensures that national resources get to him for his programme, otherwise he will be sent packing after the first term.
The good start is to read the available laws, start applying them at your level while explaining them to those who may not be able to read, and then taking note of gaps as per your expectations.
And for the up-coming election, get registered, vote and ensure that your vote is counted.
We need peace, but especially, we need understanding.

Kihkishiy Lawrence.

Tchiroma saga: when limited minds fuse.

Resigning from any government should be no surprise. In the history of democracy, the term "cross the carpet" is key. It simply means change of stance.
However, when it happens more than once, the politician in question becomes a fool. If in their foolishness they succeed to pull others, then limited minds have fused.
In the case of Issa Tchiroma, his resignation and readiness to stand for the next election would have been considered as his usual game, but for the reaction that came from a supposedly fervent supporter of President Paul Biya, one lady called Adja Awa. In her lengthy audio outburst she believes that she is attacking her former ally, Tchiroma, whom she played a key role in his appointment as minister. In fact she is shooting a missile in the foot.
How can a normal person go out to explain how the government was cooked in the village and implemented in Yaounde. Calling names, especially of dead parties makes matters worse. Telling the world how Haman Adama was to be removed from government and the businessman Bayero Fadil came to negotiate a deal in the Preaident's village for her to be maintained.
If the CPDM has any energy left it should be used to "teach Adja Awa a lesson". You do not go to that extent in political matters. Tchiroma now has the confidence to go ahead with his own subtle betrayal, knowing that his issue is too small compared to the huge machinery exposed by this lady.
All political systems have their secrets. The USA recalls the Watergate scandal. Leaking the secret is the worse betrayal than resignation.

Strange Tchiroma turn around.

"For the first time since independence, a presidential election would take place without the present President. A country cannot exist to serve one man. It must serve the people". Coming from the man we have listened to many times explaining his attachment to President Paul Biya, this can only be what the other minister, Jean de Dieu Momo calls "betrayal". Well, we will see how far he goes, but will he have the courage to look his friends of yesterday in the face?

Tchiroma is candidate for presidency in 2025. We imagine his campaign content given this back and forth movements. He has just announced it in Garoua.
