Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea): Causes, Symptoms, and Relief

1️⃣ What Are Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are painful contractions of the uterus that occur before or during menstruation. The pain is caused by uterine muscle contractions triggered by the release of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that help shed the uterine lining.

2️⃣ Types of Menstrual Cramps

🔹 Primary Dysmenorrhea – Normal period pain caused by uterine contractions, typically beginning in adolescence.
🔹 Secondary Dysmenorrhea – Caused by underlying medical conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

3️⃣ Symptoms of Menstrual Cramps

✔️ Pain in the lower abdomen (sharp, dull, or throbbing).
✔️ Lower back and thigh pain.
✔️ Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea in some cases.
✔️ Fatigue, headaches, or dizziness.
✔️ Pain that can last 24-72 hours and varies in intensity.

4️⃣ Causes of Severe Menstrual Cramps

⚠️ High Prostaglandin Levels – Leads to stronger uterine contractions and more pain.
⚠️ Endometriosis – Uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing severe cramps.
⚠️ Fibroids – Noncancerous growths in the uterus leading to heavy, painful periods.
⚠️ Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) – Infections in reproductive organs causing intense pain.
⚠️ Adenomyosis – Uterine lining grows into the muscle wall, making cramps worse
