Yaya Discovers Antigua 🇦🇬 — Episode 4: What Is J’Ouvert?

So, what exactly is J’Ouvert?:
J’Ouvert (pronounced “joo-vay”) comes from the French Creole phrase "jour ouvert", meaning “opening of the day” or dawn. And fittingly, J’Ouvert takes place around daybreak — often starting before dawn and continuing into the morning.
It’s a major part of Carnival in many Caribbean countries and is widely associated with Trinidad and Tobago, where the tradition developed after emancipation. At its origin, it carries themes of freedom, resistance, satire and self-expression.
Traditionally, participants may cover themselves in coloured powder, paint, mud, molasses, oil — even chocolate.
We kept it cute though. We had just water. 💦
The idea of getting “dirty” isn't necessarily just about having fun. It's also been interpreted as a way of masking or transforming oneself — letting loose and becoming someone else, if only for a few hours.
So, pick your poison: which would you happily cover yourself in for fun — coloured powder, paint, mud, oil, molasses, chocolate (yum), water… a mixture of some or all of the above? Or none of the above? 😂
