This time last year, I was ticking off a major bucket list item: playing mas in the Caribbean — and it was the best experience ever!
The costume and makeup, the body positivity and acceptance, the pure joy of partying with a group of like-minded women (many of whom I was meeting for the first time), getting intimately acquainted with rum punch, falling in love with soca, dancing in the rain, challenging my own assumptions about carnival culture, the joy of spotting another Cameroonian flag 🇨🇲 in the crowd and even seeing Rihanna up close — unforgettable.

I highly recommend that everyone experience carnival at least once in their life. I’ll totally be doing it again, God willing.

To all the carnival-goers in Barbados: Happy Grand Kadooment Day! Have fun on di road!
And to my people in Toronto — how was Caribana?

✨ Did you or will you be going to any carnival this year? 🎭 Did you play or will you be playing mas (wearing a costume)?

Do you ever hear a song that instantly transports you back to a trip — bringing memories and moments flooding in with vivid clarity?

For me, Skankin’ Sweet by Chronixx does that for Jamaica. It perfectly captures the vibe of how I felt then, and how I still feel whenever I think about that trip.

Terrence (Travel & Tours) played it in his van during our road trip to Ocho Rios, and me and my playlist are eternally grateful to him for that.

Every time I hear it, I’m right back there: wide-eyed at the lush beauty of the country as we drove past green tropical vegetation, winding roads, rolling hills… hearing the roar of Dunn’s River Falls, sipping fresh coconut water and scooping out the creamy flesh with the shell, buying hot hard dough bread on the roadside, and soaking in the joy of being with people I love.

So many emotions rooted in contentment, joy, and pure happiness.

I release the desire/compulsion to plan my solo trips down to the last detail.

Signed,
A Recovering Overthinker.

Are you one to plan your trips down to the last detail , do you go with the flow or maybe you try to find a balance between the two?

June moments...

1. Trying to keep my body moving with walks on beautiful days.

2. Finally, made it to this “little” neighbourhood bakery (that happens to be one of Quebec’s largest bakery wholesalers) during opening hours. The challah is 👌🏾.

3. Caught Montreal Grand Prix weekend fever. I’ll be back.

4. I had only ever seen french fries used as a shawarama filling in Cameroon till I had the chicken shawarma at .mtl - they are delicious!

5. At this year’s first edition of the street food festival.

6. Everyone recommends Fairmount and St-Viateur bagels to Montreal visitors but hear me out, have they ever tried the bagels from . Always good, always fresh (plus peep the F1-themed wrap paper in the slide, so cute 🏁)

7. Watched Nephew graduate from high school and restrained myself from crying Aunty tears of pride.

8. Wandered around and realized I’ve been sleeping on thrift store jewelry.

9. My lost but found star earrings from . They have literally been on my dresser for about 2 years but the box was hidden under another box 🤦🏾‍♀️.

May July be made of even more beautiful moments. What are some of your favourite moments from June or what are you looking forward to in July?

It was a one-night stay in Panama. I was wandering the streets of Panama City and stumbled on La Calle De los Sombreros, the pretty street, colourful hats and literally, a spotlight - fitting, for a woman taking centre stage in her main-character energy .

What does being the main character in your story look like to you?

After living in the city for over ten years, I finally experienced the Montreal Grand Prix for the first time this year — and let me tell you, I was NOT ready for the vibes, the luxury, and the chaos.

Here’s what I learned (so you show up prepared):

💡 You don’t need race tickets to feel the excitement. You can go to the Jean Drapeau subway station, the closest station to the race site, and soak in the excitement in the air. Avoid the station at least 30 minutes before and after a race due to huge crowds. You should also go downtown. The whole downtown transforms into a party, especially Peel and Crescent Streets. Free DJs and concerts, fancy car displays, and people dressed to the nines.

💡 There’s rich, and then there’s Grand Prix rich. The wealth in the streets was soft flexing at its finest. I was looking at the costs of some of the Grand Prix packages, parties, cars and thought whew - this is where the money resides!

💡 Dress like you’re meeting your future husband / wife. Because you might. ‘Nuff said.

💡 Planning is KEY. There is so much to do around the city. Make a list of everything you’d like to do, followed by a plan to make things happen. Want to hit the best parties? Get your tickets early, so you can secure your place and also possibly get Early Bird prices. Want to try a new restaurant that just opened and makes hand-made pasta? Make reservations.

💡 Attendees show up & show OUT. Even if you’re not into F1, go for the fashion, the energy, the parade of fancy cars, the chance to make unexpected memories and especially the people-watching.

Would I go again? 1000%.
Would I do it bigger next time? Absolutely.

✨ Save this post if you're thinking about going in 2026!

Been to an F1 weekend? Tell me about it in the comments.
