calls amidst heightened anger, frustration
Never in the history of Cameroon have calls for peace bombarded the ears, echoing from every corner of the country as it is the case now. Administrators, civil society, religious, traditional authorities, multiplying sittings to talk peace and issuing releases to preach peace. But why call for peace?
It’s been 12 days since Cameroonians went to the polls to elect a President who will steer the wheels of the country for the next seven years and while official results are expected on October 27, there’s heightened anger, bitterness and frustration.
The excitement from the exit poll in the evening of October 12, based on trends, which showed that opposition candidate, Issa Tchiroma Bakary was well on course to become Cameroon’s third Head of State, quickly turned to sadness and frustration for many.
Allegations of ballot stuffing, falsification of election return sheets, inflating figures to favour the incumbent among other electoral ills have continued to animate several debates.
Whether these allegations are founded or not, Cameroonians, in their majority have been asking more questions than they have had answers.
Yes, phone cameras captured individuals stuffing ballot boxes, inflating the number of ballots cast in some polling stations or running away with ballot boxes and these images and videos have been trending on social media networks. All of these in whose favour? Your answer is good as mine.
Two days ago, the National Vote Counting Commission concluded the compilation of results from the 58 Divisions of the country and the figures, already in circulation give the sitting President a 53% victory ahead of his immediate challenger, Tchiroma with 35%.
These figures alone have pricked the bile of those who are declaring to have voted in their numbers for the FSNC opposition candidate. They have been voicing their frustration claiming their victory has been STOLEN.
In the past days, streets protest and, in some cases, acts of vandalism have been recorded in Douala, Yaounde, Garoua, Dschang, Maroua, Ngaoundere, Kaele, Guider, Mokolo… and more demonstrations are feared in the days ahead.
The atmosphere surrounding the post-election period has left many fearing that the worse may happen.
This explains the numerous calls for peace. But what if the results to be declared Monday do not reflect the ballot box, will it not be normal for those who feel their victory has been STOLEN to demand for the right thing to be done?
PEACE????? Yes! But what about the common Cameroonian who has been subjected to misery for several years, will he see peace from the same lens as the one who has been dipping his hands into the state purse and feeding fat.
War has never been a solution because the end result will only be destruction but isn’t it time to stop the pretense, do the right thing and avoid pouring more fuel into the already lit fire?
