En collaboration avec l‘écrivain et curateur Dzekashu MacViban, le laboratoire.kontempo explore la théorisation de l‘art à travers de nouvelles méthodes de production de connaissances et différentes approches épistémiques. En mettant côte à côte l‘art visuel, la poésie, les proverbes et les idiomes, un dialogue est créé entre les pratiques littéraires, de performance et d‘exposition.

Le proverbe lingala „Kokende Liboso Eza Kokoma Te“ (aller de l‘avant ne signifie pas d‘être arrivé), qui s’inscrit dans le même ordre d’idée que proverbe africain „Si tu veux aller vite, marche seul. Si tu veux aller loin, marchons ensemble“, devient la porte d‘entrée pour explorer la relation dialectique entre les récits et les temporalités, ainsi que la manière dont ceux-ci peuvent être remis en question et élargis en proposant des récits qui s‘appuient sur différents modes de connaissance épistémologiques. Kokende Liboso Eza Kokoma Te : Essai sur les Récits Contigus et les Cosmologies Poétiques est une continuation de la mission du Laboratoire Kontempo qui questionne les structures de pouvoir existantes, les récits et tente de développer de nouvelles stratégies spatiales pour la création artistique, la théorisation et la discussion. À cette fin, ce projet rassemble des positions artistiques qui se penchent sur, reprécisent et développent des récits, des philosophies et des cosmologies à travers les interventions visuelles, performatives, sonores et poétiques qui se tiendront dans différentes parties de Kinshasa, des rues aux institutions artistiques.

"Each translator was asked to provide a single translation of “Le poème de Yambacongo” in any version of English and using any translation strategy. As far as I’m aware, the poem hasn’t been translated into English before. Translators were also asked to provide a short commentary. I did not want to lead the translators in any direction, so I waited to see if they asked me questions, if they had queries for Awono, or if they wanted his contact details. This did have an impact on my own translation as I was privy to more background information than I would ordinarily have requested. However, I did create my translation before I read any others. In addition, we were all aware that there were going to be eighteen other versions of this poem, and that certainly gave me more freedom, thus straying further from the source text than I may ordinarily have done. According to Weinberger, I’m the rebellious child that kicks back at the parent-original, while others may be overly-attached!"

"Sugartown" by Gladwel Pamba

A day after Eli’s burial, Grace came to me to ask if I could watch over Sella as she was going for the night shift. Even though her compound and mine shared a kei-apple hedge, she had never crossed over to my side. It was the pay week when Red Square belched with satisfaction, the customers spilling onto the patio and holding their beers. During the pay week, men hid behind caps and big jackets and sat with burly women who crooned and touched their beards making demands they couldn’t refuse. Now, standing in front of me, Grace wasn’t requesting, it was a command in the way she handed over Sella’s food tin and sweater, and left.

At midnight, Grace knocked on my door to pick Sella. I told her she could pick her up in the morning, but she said no and I opened my door to her in the backdrop of the moon glowing in the night sky, that for a second, she appeared like a supernatural creature, her shadow disappearing under her feet.

“You didn’t feed her any of that fish, did you?” she asked me, now standing in the middle of the room as I lit the lantern, the smell of fish heavy in the air.

“I have never poisoned anyone.”

“She is allergic to it,” she said, her eyes on me. “That is why I gave you her food. I wasn’t a fool.”

“You barely know her and—”

“She is my child. Don’t!”

It was how those words leapt out, hard and cold that I didn’t speak no more. Her smoldering eyes shot me a disdainful look and her hand was folded into a fist.

"La mémoire de l'océan" de Leila Fortune Tsatchou

La nuit est agitée.

L’eau se brise sur la falaise ; le sol tremble sous la puissance des pas des danseurs ; l’air vibre sous la voix des chanteurs ; mon sang pulse à chaque coup de tambour. Mon corps n’est plus que sensations, mon esprit tendu vers l’invisible.

« Où es-tu ? »

Les yeux clos, j’exécute les figures les unes après les autres, sans même y penser. Les bras tendus en une courbe gracieuse, j’effectue un bond en avant. Je frissonne à peine alors que l’air embrasse la peau de mon ventre dévoilé par le tissu fin qui habille mon buste. Une jupe ample, de la même matière, enserre mes reins et termine sa course juste au-dessus de mes chevilles. Cette tenue a été imaginée pour ne gêner aucun de mes mouvements durant la cérémonie. Même les bijoux dorés qui décorent mon cou, mes poignets et mes pieds ne signalent leur présence que par un faible tintement occasionnel.

Les mouvements s’enchaînent. Le pas de l’oiseau qui prend son envol, ailes tendues dans l’espoir d’attirer l’attention de la lune. Mes mains reviennent vers moi, me caressent le visage, imitant le passage du vent. Alors que mon corps saute, tournoie, s’agenouille, se relève, mon esprit s’éloigne peu à peu pour rejoindre celles qui ont accompli le rituel avant moi.

Ce moment, je l’ai attendu toute ma vie. Je danse depuis ma plus tendre enfance dans l’attente du jour où je plongerais dans l’océan pour accomplir le destin de ma famille.

Anne-Sophie Stefanini, Marc Alexandre Oho Bambe et Hemley Boum sommes tellement heureux de vous accueillir pour cette expérience pédagogique et poétique.

Cette année, nous avons la joie d'accueillir dans l'équipe Gladys Marivat, journaliste et critique littéraire qui interviendra sur l'écriture journalistique destinée à la presse et aux plateformes numériques.
Les postulants devront avoir entre 21 et 33 ans.

A few photographs from A Glossary of Things We Need To Unlearn, an event on language variations and translation as an art form (in partnership with the University of Bristol ) with Nfor E Njinyoh (editor, Bakwa Books/ Bakwa Magazine), Mari Ette (éditions Nuances) and Nchanji Njamnsi (translator). This was followed by a translation slam by Marie-hélène Ngoah and JG Ngom, facilitated by Jessie Ndjeya . It took place on 12.06.22 at The Forest Creative Loft
