Ru ware is regarded as the foremost of the Five Great Kilns of the Song Dynasty. Produced at the Ru Kiln during the Northern Song period, it was made primarily for the imperial court and became renowned as the finest of ancient Chinese ceramics. Its signature sky-celadon glaze is soft and elegant, often accompanied by delicate crackles resembling cicada wings. Under different lighting, the glaze appears to change subtly, expressing the poetic beauty of “the sky turning clear after rain.”

Ru ware follows a simple and restrained aesthetic, with very little carved or painted decoration. Instead, its beauty comes almost entirely from the glaze itself, reflecting the refined and understated taste of Song Dynasty literati. Production was suddenly interrupted by warfare at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, making surviving Ru ware extremely rare and precious. Over the centuries, generations of craftsmen have continued to study and recreate its lost techniques. Ru ware embodies the aesthetic ideals of the Song people and represents one of the highest achievements of traditional Chinese celadon art.
