Micron storage prices are about to rise again! On September 12, industry sources suddenly reported that Micron has issued a notice to its channels, stating that all storage products will soon see significant price increases ranging from 20% to 30%. Even more shocking, automotive electronics storage chips could jump by as much as 70%!
As soon as the news broke, the entire chip distribution circle was in an uproar. Although there's still no official confirmation, market sentiment has been completely ignited — many agents have already suspended quotations, spot market prices are generally rising, and more distributors are choosing to hold off and wait for the dust to settle.
You might be wondering how this price hike will affect us. At the moment, there are very few quotes available in the market. Some distributors of Micron products revealed that the 16GB DDR4 is seeing the steepest increase — in early September, the industrial-grade version was still around $21, but now it has jumped by 30%. Commercial-grade is slightly cheaper, and 8GB DDR4 remains relatively stable for now at $7–$9 due to sufficient supply.
However, as rumored, booking prices have generally increased by 20%–30%, and the spot market reaction is often even more intense — actual transaction prices may exceed the official increase. It's not just Micron; DDR4 products from other brands are also following suit with small increases, creating a market-wide rhythm.
What's puzzling is that Micron only recently announced the discontinuation of some DDR4 products.
Why is it suddenly implementing another price hike? Two theories are circulating: some believe that customer demand forecasts indicate serious shortages ahead, prompting Micron to adjust its strategy and suspend quotations; others think it might be related to Micron's upcoming financial report — suspending quotations could be a way to create market momentum.
Interestingly, despite reports that Samsung and SK Hynix plan to extend DDR4 production until next year, the market doesn't seem to be calming down. Is Micron's move really supported by supply-demand fundamentals, or is it a desperate measure from a storage giant during an industry downturn?
Regardless of the reasons, prices have already quietly started climbing. What we're more concerned about is — will this eventually affect the consumer market? Will smartphones, computers, cars, and even smart devices soon become more expensive?
