🌿 Big breakthrough alert!
Scientists in China have turned to one of Earth’s oldest materials: bamboo, to tackle one of humanity’s newest problems: plastic pollution.
They’ve developed a bamboo-cellulose based plastic that is as durable and flexible as petroleum-based plastic, yet according to lab tests fully biodegrades in soil within ~50 days. Made by dissolving bamboo cellulose and re-organising it into a tough, high-performance material, it matches or beats many conventional plastics in strength and thermal stability.
If scaled globally, this kind of advance could help redirect billions of tons of plastic waste away from our oceans and landfills. It’s a powerful symbol of how ancient wisdom + modern science can unite to heal the planet. 🌱💡
