Whispers in May Claims DOX:AWARD Best Film at CPH:DOX 2026

Whispers in May, directed by Dongnan Chen, has won the DOX:AWARD (Best Film) at the 2026 Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (CPH:DOX).

The film was selected as one of the Top 10 Projects at the inaugural SmallRig Social Impact Image Pitching Sessions in 2025 and received financial and product support from SmallRig during its production.

Following its recognition at CPH:DOX, the film was later selected for Visions du Réel, DOK.fest München, and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

The Story Behind the Film
War and forced migration shatter countless young lives. Many children lose familiar surroundings, friends and sense of belonging overnight. Instead of using professional child actors, this production invites youth who have lived through displacement to share their feelings on camera.
We witness how harsh circumstances crush childhood fantasies, yet these young souls make a quiet choice: refuse to be defined by suffering. Even without stable shelter and a peaceful life, they hold onto simple wishes for joy. The film is a tribute to every displaced child and a reminder for audiences to practise deeper empathy.

Creator Background
Director Yulia Plotnikova specialises in intimate, human-centred storytelling. She believes authentic emotion cannot be fully performed — only lived experience can deliver genuine feeling.
