"Nanjing’s Vibrant Development Today Is Truly Remarkable. May People Around the World Foster Peace and Friendship Through Mutual Understanding," Says Mark Thomas, Nephew of George Hogg, an International Friend Who Aided China During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression

In early 1938, British journalist George Hogg crossed the oceans to China, joining the Chinese people’s resistance against Japanese aggression, armed only with his pen. On August 15, 2025, Mark Thomas, Hogg’s nephew and a representative of the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding, came to Nanjing for the book launch of “Let History Speak and Facts Bear Witness”, a research series on the Nanjing Massacre. In an exclusive interview with iNanjing on August 16, Mark Thomas shared that he and the Society are working to bring his uncle’s eyewitness accounts of China to British audiences. He also spoke about his impressions of cities like and : “The remarkable prosperity and development here are truly astonishing.” He also called for greater global understanding to advance peace and friendship.

【Building a “Bridge of Memory” with Historical Facts — Promotional Event for Research Publication Series on Nanjing Massacre Held Today】

On August 15, the “Truths of the Past Voices of the Present” Promotional Event for Research Publication Series on Nanjing Massacre was held at the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. The event brought together over 50 participants, including experts and scholars engaged in historical research on the and its international communication, descendants of survivors, and international friends. On that very day, Thomas Rabe, Megan Brady, and other members of the fourth cohort of “Nanjing Massacre Memory Keepers” were officially presented with their appointment certificates.This transnational gathering not only marked a solemn remembrance of history but also enabled Nanjing and the world to jointly build a “Bridge of Memory” firmly grounded in irrefutable facts and connecting the past with the future.

【A Decade in the Making: Rabe and China - Seeking to Spread His Grandfather’s The Diaries of John Rabe to Younger Generations】

“My grandfather and his friends helpedestablish the Nanjing Safety Zone, saving 250,000 civilians. I want younger generations to know his story.” Thomas Rabe, the grandson of John Rabe, author of The Diaries of John Rabe, currently serves as Honorary Professor at Heidelberg University and Chairman of the John Rabe Communication Centre. On August 14, he paid a visit to the John Rabe Former Residence Memorial at Nanjing University. In an interview with the media, he introduced his decade-long work Rabe and China. This book meticulously chronicles the life story of John Rabe, with particular focus on his first-hand accounts during the Nanjing Massacre perpetrated by the Japanese invading forces, as well as his collaboration with fellow international volunteers to establish a safety zone protecting refugees. Before the memorial statue of his grandfather, Thomas Rabe read aloud excerpts from The Diaries of John Rabe and shared stories about his grandfather’s life with the audience.

On August 12th, Marcus Détrez, a French friend who donated 618 photos of the Anti-Japanese War to China without compensation, arrived in Nanjing accompanied by his friends Bastien Rata and Zhong Haosong. They visited the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, the former residence of John Rabe, the Nanjing City Wall Museum and the Zhonghua Gate Castle, among other landmarks.
Throughout their journey in , Marcus and his companions reflected on justice and peace and voiced their visions for the future. They unanimously lauded that “Nanjing is an amazing city”, and extended a warm invitation: “Welcome everyone to experience Nanjing, this renowned city steeped in over three millennia of history and culture.”

On the morning of August 12, Marcus Détrez, who donated historical WWII photographs to China, visited the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders with his friends.
Paying tribute to the victims of the Nanjing Massacre, the group laid flowers, observed a moment of solemn silence, and together tolled the Bell of Peace.
As the visit drew to a close, Marcus solemnly inscribed in Chinese in the memorial guestbook: “Let the past be our teacher; we will never forget.”
Marcus's friends Bastien RATA and Zhong Haosong added the inscriptions, such as “Peace and Justice” and “Never Forget Our National Humiliation”.
