Their diet consists mostly of plants, including leaves, buds, wild fruits, bamboo shoots, and lichens. Different species of golden snub-nosed monkeys have slightly different diets due to their different habitats. For example, the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey's diet includes nearly 100-118 plant species, while about 60% of the Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey's diet consists of lichen. Golden snub-nosed monkeys possess a special foregut containing microorganisms that can break down cellulose, making them typical "foliage-eaters," evolved specifically for efficiently digesting plant leaves. In this video, two females are grooming a male, who appears remarkably relaxed. Suddenly, one of the females scratches the male's butt vigorously. Experts analyze that this isn't a hint of something; it's actually the female feeling her own bottom itchy, instead, she scratched the same place of the male's because of concentration on her grooming.

Today is so boring!
Summer is good for the golden snub-nosed monkeys living in the high-altitude mountains of Shennongjia. They have plenty of food and don't have to worry about finding food or keeping warm. However, there are also times when they feel very uncomfortable. Excessive sunlight and rising temperatures, coupled with cloudy, windless days and low air pressure, make the monkeys feel listless and incredibly bored.

It is also the prime season for tracking large troops of these monkeys, as the plentiful food supply often draws them together to forage in the same woodland area. When you hear the rustling of leaves from afar—occasionally punctuated by the sound of snapping branches—it usually signals that a troop is nearby. Over this period, they have thrived with remarkable speed: their limbs have grown stronger, their bodies more robust, and their activity levels have soared. The golden snub-nosed monkey is a flagship species of Shennongjia National Park and a Class I national protected animal in China. Shennongjia marks the easternmost limit of the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey's distribution. Although they live in troops, their social structure is based on family units; these are polygynous groups ranging in size from a few to several dozen members. Typically, young males are driven out of the family before the age of three. The male serves as the protector of the family and is the most revered member within the group.
