Did you know that in Serbian tradition there are three special family holidays before Christmas?
One for children — Detinjci, one for mothers — Materice, and one for fathers — Oci.
These old customs remind us of the importance of family and shared moments.

🔥Why do we light a fire in front of churches every January 6?
In Serbia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7 according to the Julian calendar. On January 6 — the day before Christmas — we have the tradition of gathering in front of the church to burn the badnjak, an oak tree that symbolizes warmth, light, and a new beginning.

🍂And how do we get the oak tree for Badnji dan (January 6)?
In 2nd photo here, you can see my brother and me walking back from the forest with the oak tree whose branches we’ll burn on Christmas and Christmas Eve. We go into the forest to cut it ourselves — a tradition that has remained in the villages, while in the cities people usually buy small badnjak branches on the streets.

✨And why are we looking for an oak tree specifically?
The oak tree was important for the Serbs even before Christianity, back when they were pagans. They believed that when this tree was burned, it would bring the sun, strength, and new life in the year ahead. And the oak tree is one of the rare deciduous trees that retain their leaves throughout the winter.
