MBATA-KULUZU! This seemingly unremarkable name nonetheless propelled a peaceful village in the Kongo-Central region—near Inkisi—into the annals of history in a breathtaking manner. Through a profound mystery, a massive cross—with a main shaft nearly six meters tall and a four-meter crossbar—appeared from nowhere and became embedded in the soil of Mbata-Kuluzu. Our ancestors, originally from Mbanza-Kongo, had already found it there when colonialists and missionaries first arrived in the Congo.

They had tried by every means to extract it from the ground but failed. For years, the local inhabitants lived in utter astonishment, witnessing supernatural events and numerous extraordinary phenomena surrounding this cross; at its summit, one could clearly decipher the inscription of Pontius Pilate’s phrase: INRI (Jesus is the King of the Jews).
