The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) has put its pension-reform concerns to Cyprus President Christodoulides, stressing the need to safeguard the adequacy of pensions and the long-term viability of the fund.

OEB President George Pantelides called the meeting substantive and constructive, saying these were concerns rather than red lines, and that the two sides discussed safeguards to protect pension adequacy in the event of an economic crisis. He said the federation backs advancing the reform, at least in its first phase, and pointed to the importance of the actuarial study due before 2031. Also on the table: labour costs, bureaucracy, energy, the nursing shortage, and the Redundancy Fund, where OEB wants the contribution reduced.

At least 8 people have died and 18 remain missing after the Filo Jet ferry capsized off Kyrenia on Sunday. 241 people were rescued, all 8 who died have now been identified and their families reached, and the search continued overnight at a wreck lying about 514 metres down.

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said 9 people have been remanded and the judicial process is continuing, pledging a transparent investigation in which every allegation is examined one by one. The cause has not yet been established. A vessel from Turkey able to work at around 1,000 metres is due to join the search on Tuesday.

Cyprus’ two leaders have agreed to meet weekly following their first encounter since António Guterres’ visit, and will name a civil society body on Thursday.
But their accounts of the nearly three-hour meeting diverged.
Christodoulides called it a good meeting on a good path, and reaffirmed his aim of resuming talks from where they broke off in 2017.

Erhürman said it took place in the shadow of developments that had damaged trust, and drew a firm line on methodology, insisting political equality must be settled before progress on other issues.
