One year ago, we were sitting on a couch, discussing the idea of making RC cars in Blender. It wasn’t supposed to be a real RC car, just a fun, customizable model for BlenderMarket (/SuperHive). Within two hours of conversation, my team convinced me that we could make it real, a fully functional RC vehicle, customizable before exporting the print files. The idea was ambitious but solid, so we started working on small steps to validate it.
We joined a startup acceleration program, tested 3D-printed RC cars at a local (but massive) hobby shop, and delivered our first-ever prototype, stress-tested during an office party. It had an unstable, funky design, but it drove like crazy, and everyone loved it. We pitched our business plan and ended up ranking 4th among the top innovations. That was cool, but we already knew we had to make the second-gen prototype way better.
So we got to work. Along the way, we brought in a CTO and CMO to the team. Then, out of nowhere, we got the chance to present Makeracer at SXSW in Austin, Texas. So last week, we did, and it was awesome!
People loved the design, especially the little technical details, the satisfyingly openable hood with a battery underneath, the functional toolbox in the bed, the printed tires, and the surprisingly effective suspension. We even got to show off the model to the Prusa Research team, who also had a booth at the expo. They approved the design, so we know we’re on the right track.
