Philippine artist Jhoane Baterna-Pateña engages with the hidden structures and cyclical existence of nature, focusing on the spatial density of plant roots and the fungi colonizing dead trees. Inspired by Timothy Morton’s theory of Dark Ecology, the series moves away from "nature" as something separate and pure to document an uncanny reality of entangled connections. The result is a profound ecological statement – a study of the "mesh" where growth within artificial limits and the recycling of organic matter demonstrate death as a vital turning point for renewal.

Hong Kong photographer Paul Yeung captures the radical shift in the image of the police following the 2014 Umbrella Movement. Departing from standard protest chronicles, his series Yes Madam, Sorry Ah Sir documents uniformed officers in moments of unintended comedy and everyday bizarreness. The result is a deeply political statement – a theater of the absurd reflecting Hong Kong’s tensions through a saturated, mocking aesthetic.

Can AI "rewrite" history? Is it acceptable to use artificial intelligence to construct history by inventing images of events that never happened?

Artist Phillip Toledano did exactly that. In his project “We Are At War,” he expanded upon Robert Capa’s iconic D-Day photographs with his own AI-generated images. Is this a powerful artistic statement or a dangerous blurring of historical truth?

To explore this, we staged a "mock debate"– a fictional clash between a photography historian and a media curator over Toledano's work, facilitated by the language model Claude.

See the work and read the full debate in the latest issue of European Photography.

When we were young – in 1982 – we first published your Bad Weather series in European Photography. Rupert Martin, a brilliant curator at The Photographers' Gallery, had introduced you to us and our readers. It was the beginning of a journey that ended far too early. R.I.P., Martin.

Thank you, Alex, for this thoughtful and eloquent review!

From the moment I picked it up, the seamless dance between German and English text, a subtle yet powerful statement of inclusivity and intellectual reach, at once captivated me. It felt like stepping into a conversation, rather than simply reading a detached analysis, and as someone who often looks....

The 3rd Prize in the Dummy Award at the Hong Kong Photobook Festival goes to Chinese photographer Ting Bang Tsai for “Shui Dang Dang – Aunt Jin Yun.” The book centers on 72-year-old Kam Wan, a vibrant woman who once ran a dumpling shop and now works as a cleaner while caring for her mother-in-law. Proudly sharing sensual photos of herself at 40, Kam challenges beauty norms with confidence and joy. Her story questions modern aesthetic standards and celebrates self-expression, aging, and body positivity. – https://hkphotobookfest.org

Congratulations to Kuwaiti artist Saad Alsharrah, awarded 2nd Prize in the Dummy Award at the Hong Kong Photobook Festival. His project “Kaino E” is a poignant visual tribute to Kunihiko Kaino, one of the last Japanese hard-helmet pearl divers who migrated to Australia after WWII. Over the course of four years, Alsharrah spent extended periods with Kaino, documenting his life in Fremantle and his eventual return to Japan. The photobook interweaves family archives and personal photographs into a poetic narrative spanning Japan and Australia, honoring a vanishing tradition and a century of lived memories. – https://hkphotobookfest.org
