Luftwaffe Ace Werner Mölders climbing into the cockpit of his Bf 109E before heading out on a sortie. Mölders was the first fighter pilot in aviation history to score 100 aerial kills on 15 July 1941. He developed fighter tactics that led to the famous Finger-Four formation. Mölders’ total of 115 confirmed victories included 14 victories during the Spanish Civil War while serving with the German “Condor Legion” (1938–1939), with the remaining 101 victories coming during WWII. He died in a Heinkel He 111 as a passenger on his way to attend a funeral. He is buried next to WWI aces Manfred von Richthofen & Ernst Udet.
In 1998 the German Parliament decided that members of the Condor Legion such as Mölders should "no longer be honored." In 2005 the German Ministry of Defence decided to remove the name "Mölders" from the fighter wing still bearing his name.Luftwaffe Ace Werner Mölders climbing into the cockpit of his Bf 109E before heading out on a sortie.
