This in-depth article traces the historical roots of this paradox, looking at the development of the LGBT movement in Ukraine from the Soviet era to the present.

Poland’s oldest drag queen is called , and she is 87. In mid-August, she celebrated her birthday with a glamorous drag show and party at a Warsaw bar. This interview took place at the Q***r Muzeum in the city center.

“Sometimes people ask if I still have the energy for all my projects. The answer is: as long as I can speak, participate, and be part of the q***r community, I feel honored. I’ve survived too much to just sit at home, stare at the ceiling, and count the flies on the lamp,”

Our network meeting in Mazury brought together journalists from across borders for four unforgettable days. We reconnected with old friends and made new ones, wrote and reflected together, practiced yoga and movement with , captured collective memories with , and found rest and inspiration surrounded by nature.

To everyone who joined us for co-operation, networking, and rest – thank you for your energy, openness, and trust (and for the photos in this post!). You reminded us why community matters.

As our two-year project on q***r history in Belarus, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine comes to a close, this was the perfect way to honor the connections we've built and the work we continue to do together.

Until we meet again 💜

From "transvestite certificates" in 1920s Berlin to today's self-chosen pronouns and names, language has always been both limiting and liberating for those navigating gender. Here is how three people today wrestle with, reclaim, and sometimes abandon the words that try to define them.

After 5 months of working on new features, longreads, podcasts, and videos, we invite you to have a first look at these publications. On October 8, we'll gather to discuss stories about q***r people creating, connecting, and finding moments of joy during war and exile.

🗓️Register via the link in bio and share this post to help us spread the word.

History Unit brings together journalists and activists from Belarus, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine to uncover overlooked q***r histories and understand present challenges.

The new publications examine resistance efforts and community organising, both historical and current. They look at q***r lives during Soviet times and in the ongoing war in Ukraine, at physical and digital displacement, disinformation campaigns, and solidarity building.

At the event, you'll find out how journalists develop and research these stories, make editorial decisions, and work with sensitive material. There will be time to ask questions and discuss the work directly with the authors.

Featured topics and authors:
🔷 Gay lives during times of persecution in Poland and Germany – and for
🔷 No safe place: lived realities of refugees between hope, unsafety, and political failure – Lili Somogyi and Eugenia Seleznova for
🔷 Q***r people in Ukraine from Soviet times to the present day – for .ua
