Andrzej Żuławski’s divorce drama/body horror/psychogramme of a divided city, POSSESSION is getting a proper German cinema release for the first time. Remastered, of course, so desolate Kreuzberg streets, tensely emotional faces and slithering tentacles have never looked better.

If you've never seen this Berlin classic, now is the perfect time for it.

POSSESSION is a divorce drama, a horror film, a meditation on the self, hope and faith, at times a satire and a mirror of divided Berlin.

The directorial debut of actress Ariane Labed (THE LOBSTER, THE BRUTALIST) tells the story of September and July, two sisters who are very close but always at odds with the world around them. As July starts to assert her independence from her sister, things start to come apart at the seams.

Based on the novel “Sisters“ (2020) by Daisy Johnson, Ariane Labed’s directorial debut oscillates between family psychodrama and horror.

Fresh from the halls and screens of the Berlin Film Festival, James Mangold's A TOTAL UNKNOWN is now (all electric and digital) in Berlin cinemas.

LIKE A COMPLETE UNKNOWN looks good, has good actors, and tells its story well, but is neither interested in Dylan’s enthusiasm for folk and blues songs of the 20s and 30s nor in his activism in the civil rights movement.

For his courtroom drama, director Clint Eastwood has cast Nicholas Hoult (NOSFERATU) as Justin, a young father to be who is called on for jury duty in a murder trial. While the case seems clear to all the other jurors and they want to hurry with sentencing the defendant, Justin knows that he is innocent because it was Justin who accidentally caused the death. But how can he make sure there is a just sentence without endangering his own future? Hoult plays the conflicting emotions masterfully in this gripping thriller.

Hoult"s portrayal of a reluctant reprobate who believes himself to be a "good man" is reminiscent of the handsome, insecure men of classic film noir. Eastwood"s politics are, as always, somewhat dubious.

A REAL PAIN succeeds in combining humor with intergenerational trauma, constantly pulling the rug out from under your feet.

The Z-Inema is capping off its spooky season with Jean Rollin's REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE at 8pm tonight. The film is very visual and with sparse dialogue, however it is still in French with German subtitles.
