🇸🇬 A tiny Singaporean snack with a BIG story.
Meet Tu Tu Kueh ❤️ A delicate steamed rice cake, traditionally filled with fragrant coconut, peanuts or gula melaka, and served warm on a little pandan leaf.
Its story goes back to Singapore’s street-hawker culture of the 1930s, when Fujian immigrant Tan Yong Fa helped popularise this bite-sized version of a traditional Hokkien rice cake. Even the name “Tu Tu” is believed to have come from the distinctive sound of the old steamers used to make it.
And here’s the part I loved: the traditional version is naturally plant-based 🌱 Rice flour + coconut/peanuts + palm sugar + pandan. Simple ingredients, centuries of culinary influences, and one seriously addictive little bite.
This is why I love travelling. You don’t just taste food, you taste history, culture and the stories of a place. 🌏
