Why is Media and Information Literacy (MIL) important for you? That’s the question DW Akademie Asia asked all participants of a MIL conference recently. It virtually brought together MIL stakeholders from Central Asia and Southeast Asia. We welcomed participants from Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
The conference participants represented very different cultures. Each of them worked in country-specific political systems and educational contexts and had developed their own approach to MIL. But there were common issues, challenges, and success stories that were relevant for everyone. It was these topics and issues of common interest we discussed and presented during our online networking conference.

DW Akademie and its partner FARO Foundation Mongolia recently presented plans for a new MIL app for Central Asia at the General Assembly of the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU ) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The “milee” app will be launched later this month. Its aim is to increase Media and Information Literacy (MIL). Byamba Jargal (Bimja) from the Faro Foundation explained that milee will also be available in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. And since Russian is a language that is widely understood in Central Asia, the app will also have self-learning courses for MIL in Russian. The app complements existing educational MIL offers, for instance in schools. Faro and DW Akademie hope that it will particularly reach young people in remote regions of Central Asia. Andreas Grigo, Program Director at DW Akademie, emphasized the importance of MIL as a key competence in the digital age – especially for handling information responsibly and actively participating in public discourse.

Aye Aye Zin is a Senior Media Trainer at the Myanmar Journalism Institute. We had to shorten her statement to make it fit into our template. This is her full statement, "MIL is important for me because, after the military coup, misinformation and disinformation have spread more widely in my country. In particular, propaganda is increasing, and many people trust it. Therefore, it is very important for Myanmar people to access reliable and accurate information. I would like to share knowledge about MIL and also learn new MIL content to improve my MIL skills."

🌱 Strengthening Media & Information Literacy in Cambodia’s Indigenous Communities 🌱
DW Akademie and our partner, Khmer Youth Association recently hosted a Training of Trainers in Ratanakiri province as part of our project.
👩‍🏫 Eight future MIL Multipliers, representing the Praov, Tompuonn, Kachak, and Kroeung indigenous groups in Cambodia gained practical skills to identify disinformation, verify facts, and share reliable knowledge within their communities.
By engaging trainers from diverse indigenous backgrounds, this program helps expand media and information literacy across Cambodia’s indigenous communities. 💡✨
A heartfelt thank-you to our participants and partners for advancing critical thinking and trustworthy information amongst the local population. 🇰🇭🙌
