What is my digital footprint? The moment you use a computer or cell phone, you leave data tracks. They can include your phone number, your computer’s serial number, the country you live in, the language you use, your browser history, your fingerprint, or the location where you access a Wi-Fi network and the internet. Many smartphone apps and social media platforms also record when you use them and for how long. In addition, some of them store your address, your e-mail address, your contact list, your photos and videos with all their metadata, your list of friends and groups, your likes, shares, and messages. They store it to tailor their services to your preferences, but they may also sell this metadata to advertisers, governments, or interest groups. Data and metadata say a lot about you. The technology you use
makes it possible to trace or identify you. This data may also reveal some things you might rather keep private. Your Facebook likes, for instance, can often reveal private beliefs and personality traits, or identify your political viewpoint or sexual orientation. These data traces are easy to tap into. Ultimately, your life becomes more and more transparent to those who store, buy, or even steal your data.

It's ( ) and this week we are going back to the year 2009. From August 17 - 28 of that year, DW Akademie cooperated with Radio the Voice of Vietnam and conducted a workshop on "News and Audience Participation" in Hanoi.
We would like to thank our colleague Marc Seidel and to David Frogier, who were co-trainers during this workshop and contributed some of these photos.

What safety risks have we seen or experienced on social media? And how can we prevent these risks and take action? These were the questions at the heart of this week’s Media 101 Club ក្លិបប្រព័ន្ធផ្សព្វផ្សាយ១០១ sessions in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia. In both cities, the club members discussed how to deal with negative aspects of social media, such as hate speech, sexting, or cyber bullying. They created scenarios illustrating cyberbullying and sexting and performed them for the other students in their group. Then, they developed strategies for preventing harm and taking action when facing such risks online.
We would like to congratulate the Media 101 Club members for their achievements, thank the dedicated trainers in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. And of course we'd like to thank everyone at Cambodian Center for Independent Media for making it all happen and sharing these photos.

For news reporters the world over, covering a national election can be a career highlight. Political polarization and disinformation can contribute to the erosion of trust in media and exacerbate social divisions. To counter this, reporters need a wide spectrum of skills to produce reliable news and information.
DW Akademie and its local partners organize election coverage trainings for journalists around the world. Here are some key takeaways:

Our joint project with Tribal News Network in Pakistan is a success story. It promotes dialogue between Afghan refugees and host communities by training women as local reporters. This article mentions the project among similar activities in Africa and South America. Congratulations to everyone involved 🤩

DW Freedom research shows that community engagement and active participation by media makers are key for facilitating dialogue.

Well this is a "first"! There are two Media 101 Club ក្លិបប្រព័ន្ធផ្សព្វផ្សាយ១០១ running parallel. One group has plunged into the three-month training in Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Phnom Penh, the other in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Both groups are exploring how to use media responsibly and how they can make their voices heard in the public discussion using media. They are looking at the pro's and con's of social media, learning how to take better photos, and they will dive into video production towards the end of the three-month curriculum. We'd like to wish all the participating students lots of fun and say a big "thank you" to the dedicated MIL trainers in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. And of course we are also super grateful to everyone at Cambodian Center for Independent Media for making it all happen. You rock :-)

🌐 What is Media and Information Literacy (MIL)?
At DW Akademie, we believe MIL is about five key skills:
Access – Analyze – Create – Reflect – Act
In today’s post we’re focusing on the final skill: Act 👀

🌏 MIL Skill #5 — Act: Use Media to Make a Difference
You’ve learned how to access, analyze, create, and reflect. Now it’s time to take action! 💪

📢 What Does “Act” Mean?
It means using media to:
• Speak up about issues you care about
• Join public conversations
• Inspire change in your community
🧠 Example: Start a social media campaign to protect the environment 🌱

💬 Why Is This Important?
Learning MIL isn’t just for the classroom. It’s for real life.
You can use your media skills to:
• Raise awareness
• Share your story
• Support a cause
• Connect with others who want change
Whether it’s local or global, your voice matters.

🤝 You’re Not Alone
You can act:
• On your own
• With friends
• As part of a group or movement
Together, you can make your school, your town — even the world — a better place.

🎯 Your Goal:
Use what you’ve learned to take action. Be bold. Be wise. Be creative. Be heard.
Media is your tool — now use it to shape a better future.

🌐 What is Media and Information Literacy (MIL)?
At DW Akademie, we believe MIL is about five key skills:
Access – Analyze – Create – Reflect – Act
Today we’ll focus on the fourth skill: Reflect 👀

🪞 MIL Skill #4 — Reflect: How Does Media Shape You and Society?
We use media every day — to chat, scroll, learn, laugh, and share. But have you ever stopped to ask:
💭 How is media changing me? My friends? My community?
That’s what reflection is all about.

🔄 What does it mean to “reflect” on media?
It means thinking about how media affects:
• You as a person (your habits, feelings, self-image)
• Society (how people talk, think, and act)
• Culture (what we value, how we connect)
📱💬 For example:
How has your life changed since you started using a smartphone?
How do social media likes or comments make you feel?

🧠 Why is reflection important?
Because media is powerful. It can:
• Shape your opinions
• Influence your emotions
• Change how people treat each other
• Affect what’s “normal” in your culture

🧭 Ask yourself:
• What kind of media do I use every day?
• How does it make me feel?
• Do I post or share things that could hurt others?
• Am I respecting privacy and copyright?
• What values am I spreading?

🎯 The goal:
To become more aware, more responsible, and more ethical in how you use and share media.
When you reflect, you grow — not just as a media user, but as a person.

It's ( ) and today we are going back to May, 2019. Here's a look behind the scenes of a Training of Trainers workshop for our Media 101 Club ក្លិបប្រព័ន្ធផ្សព្វផ្សាយ១០១ in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. At the time, DW Akademie and the MIL club trainers explored how to teach video production and video editing during the MIL club sessions. One of the exercises for the trainers was to produce short videos like this one. Since then, many participants in the Media 101 Clubs in Phnom Penh and at PUC Siem Reap have learned how to produce their own videos. This has given them an opportunity to introduce their stories and point of view into the public discussion. We would like to thank all MIL Club trainers and everyone at Cambodian Center for Independent Media for making the Media 101 Clubs such a resounding success.

🌐 What is Media and Information Literacy (MIL)?
At DW Akademie, we believe MIL is about five key skills:
Access – Analyze – Create – Reflect – Act
Today we’ll focus on the third skill: Create 👀

🎨 MIL Skill #3 — Create: Share Your Voice with the World!
Creating media messages is more than just posting online — it’s about expressing yourself, sharing your ideas, and making an impact.

✍️ What Can You Create?
You can make:
• 📸 Photos with a message
• 🎥 Short videos or reels
• 🎙️ Podcasts or voice notes
• 📝 Blog posts or social media content
• 🎮 Even games or animations!
All you need is a topic, a message, and a little creativity.

💡 Why Is This Important?
Creating media helps you:
• Speak up about what matters to you
• Join conversations in your community and understand other opinions
• Build confidence in your voice
• Learn how to use digital tools
You don’t need fancy equipment — just a phone or computer and your ideas!

🤝 Teamwork Makes It Better
Creating media is often a team effort. You can:
• Plan together
• Share ideas
• Edit and improve each other’s work
Different skills = stronger stories!

🎯 Your Goal:
Don’t just consume media — create it. Your voice matters. Your story matters. Start small, be bold, and keep learning!

🌐 What is Media and Information Literacy (MIL)?
At DW Akademie, we believe MIL is about five key skills:
Access – Analyze – Create – Reflect – Act
Let’s look at the second skill today: Analyze 👀
🧠 MIL Skill #2 — Analyze: Don’t Just Watch, Think!
• Evaluating media content
• Critically analyzing media messages: who made it, how is it made…
• Example: analyze the quality of a news article. Is it neutral, biased, is it disinformation…?

In today’s world, we see and hear media everywhere — on our phones, in games, on social media, in music, and more. But do we stop and ask: Who made this? Why? Can I trust it? That’s what analyzing media is all about.

🔍 What does it mean to “analyze” media?
It means looking deeper at what you see, read, or hear.
Ask yourself:
• Who created this content?
• What is their goal?
• Is it balanced and fair or biased?
• Is it real or fake?
📌 Example:
You read a news article. Is it telling both sides of the story? Or is it trying to make you believe something without proof?

🎮📰🎧 There are many kinds of media:
• 📚 Books and newspapers
• 🎥 Videos and photos
• 🎮 Games and websites
• 📱 Social media and music
Each one sends messages in different formats. And each one can be analyzed.

💬 Ask smart questions like:
• Who is the target audience?
• What’s the message behind the message?
• Is this trying to inform me — or influence me?
• What’s missing from this story?
The more questions you ask, the better you understand the media around you.

🎯 Why it matters:
When you analyze media, you become a smarter media user. You can spot disinformation (so-called “fake news”), understand hidden messages, and make better choices about what to believe and share.
