DW Akademie, Cambodian Center for Independent Media, and PDP-Center (បណ្ដាញយុវជនភីឌីភីសង្កាត់ក្របីរៀល) recently met in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to kick off the EU-funded project “Be part of it! Youth empowerment as a key to inclusive policy making for Cambodia”. The project seeks to contribute to an inclusive, participatory, empowered and independent civil society and democratic space in Cambodia. It empowers young people, particularly women and members of marginalized groups, to make their voices heard and take active part in societal and political processes. During the 5-day internal inception workshop, the project team took a deep dive into project activities, target groups and stakeholders, reviewed risks and challenges, and discussed team roles and responsibilities. Thank you to the whole team. And here’s to a successful project!

Indigenous youth from Vern Sai, Ratanakiri, Cambodia, completed MIL training centered on three key modules: MY STORY, OUR STORY, OUR POWER. These modules guided participants in articulating their personal experiences, understanding their community's broader narrative, and using media effectively.

The training equipped them with skills to identify disinformation, stay safe online, and think critically about information. Participants created their own media content – short videos, interviews, and social media posts – showcasing their perspectives and community stories.

At the youth exchange forum, participants presented their self-produced videos and performed a theater piece exploring MIL themes and local issues. Local authorities were invited specifically for dialogue with the youth, who led discussions on topics important to them. This format allowed young people to directly communicate their concerns and ideas to decision-makers in their community.

Vern Sai's indigenous youth are actively participating in community dialogue! 💬

Graduates of our Media 101 Club ក្លិបប្រព័ន្ធផ្សព្វផ្សាយ១០១ in Siem Reap, Cambodia, tackled a critical social issue – and this powerful video is the result!

During their Media and Information Literacy (MIL) training, participants were challenged to identify a MIL topic close to their hearts and create a meaningful message through video. "My Dream" is the result – tackling discrimination and hate speech with authenticity and skill.

What makes this even more remarkable? The producers come from diverse academic backgrounds – not just media and journalism students, but young people from all fields of study, many with no prior media experience. Everything you see here – the storytelling, filming, editing – was learned during the Media 101 training and through their own dedication and enthusiasm.

This is what happens when you give young people the tools, the skills, and the platform – they create content that matters! 🎬

A huge thank you to the trainers who supported them throughout this journey.

Navigating a digital landscape filled with misinformation, online scams, and harmful content, indigenous youth in Borkeo, Cambodia, participated in MIL training to equip themselves with critical skills for the challenges they face daily.

Built around three modules: MY STORY, OUR STORY, OUR POWER, participants explored how to tell their individual stories, connect them to their community's collective narrative, and recognize media as a tool for change.

Through practical sessions, they developed skills to combat disinformation, recognize online threats, and critically evaluate information. They then applied these skills by creating their own media products – videos, interviews, and social media content that authentically represent their voices and experiences.

The youth exchange forum brought participants together with local authorities for meaningful dialogue. Youth showcased their self-produced videos, and facilitated discussions on issues they selected. Local authorities participated actively, creating opportunities for youth to express their concerns and engage in constructive conversation about their community.

Borkeo's indigenous youth are making their voices heard! 🎬

On November 22 at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference, DW Akademie's Displacement and Dialogue Team hosted an exclusive peer exchange: "Muckraking at a Distance: Peer Exchange for Exiled Media from Myanmar and Afghanistan" and presented the new study "Media in exile – Resilience mechanisms and survival strategies when covering Afghanistan and Myanmar."

The session brought together 30 exiled media professionals from Myanmar, Afghanistan, and beyond to share knowledge across four critical areas: remote security protocols, cross-border verification methods, sustainable exile media models, and trauma-informed journalism. The discussion highlighted the resilience and courage of those holding power accountable under the most challenging circumstances.

Cyberbullying is one of the most critical issues affecting young people today, often causing invisible harm. Graduates of our Media 101 MIL Club in Siem Reap confronted this issue – and created this impactful video!

During their training, participants were challenged to identify a MIL topic close to their hearts and create a meaningful message through video. They chose to shine a light on the suffering caused by cyberbullying, producing "The Silent Pain Behind the Screen" with sensitivity and skill.

What makes this remarkable? The producers come from diverse academic backgrounds – not just media and journalism students, but young people from all fields of study, many with no prior media experience. Everything you see here – the narrative, filming, editing – was learned during the Media 101 training and through their own commitment and creativity.

Supported by their trainers throughout the process, these young creators transformed their learning into content that addresses a very pressing issue!🎬

What does MIL (Media and Information Literacy) mean to you? That’s what we asked newly qualified MIL trainers in Cambodia’s Ratanakiri Province. They are part of the MILdemic project that DW Akademie and our partner, Khmer Youth Association are organizing. The project actively involves multipliers from diverse indigenous backgrounds. They represent the Praov, Tompuonn, Kachak, and Kroeung indigenous groups in Cambodia. All of them took part in a “Training of Trainers” workshop and now share their newly gained knowledge and skills to identify disinformation and verify facts with their communities. That’s how the MILdemic project helps Cambodia’s indigenous communities expand their media skills.

Following the impactful MIL TTT (Train-the-Trainer) refresher session in Siem Reap, our newly upskilled trainers immediately put their learning into action – delivering innovative AI-MIL sessions to students at the Media 101 Club in Siem Reap, together with DW Akademie.

The question that sparked it all: Is AI a curse or a blessing?

Our trainers guided participants through critical discussions on generative AI, prompt engineering, ethical concerns, and the limitations of AI chatbots. It was inspiring to see students actively explore these complex topics, share diverse perspectives, and engage with the technology shaping their future.

This program is implemented by the Cambodian Center for Independent Media, in collaboration with PUC Siem Reap and supported by DW Akademie Asia.
