Why is Media and Information Literacy (MIL) important for you? That’s the question DW Akademie Asia asked all participants of a MIL conference in late 2025. It virtually brought together MIL stakeholders from Central Asia and Southeast Asia. We welcomed participants from Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
The conference participants represented very different cultures. Each of them worked in country-specific political systems and educational contexts and had developed their own approach to MIL. But there were common issues, challenges, and success stories that were relevant for everyone. It was these topics and issues of common interest we discussed and presented during our online networking conference.
Kyaw Myo Thura Htun is a freelance journalist from Myanmar. We had to shorten his statement to make it fit into our template. This is his full quote, "MIL is an essential skill for becoming an informed and responsible audience in today’s powerful and complex media landscape. The content presented in media can often contain biased perspectives, misinformation, or hidden commercial intentions, so it is crucial for readers to be able to critically evaluate accuracy, purpose, and intent. Blindly accepting media messages without analysis can influence one’s social and political views and contribute to the spread of false information. Therefore, having the ability to question, interpret, and assess media content is increasingly important for audiences in this modern age."
