Why is Media and Information Literacy (MIL) important for you? That’s the question DW Akademie Asia asked all participants of a MIL conference in late 2025. It virtually brought together MIL stakeholders from Central Asia and Southeast Asia. We welcomed participants from Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
The conference participants represented very different cultures. Each of them worked in country-specific political systems and educational contexts and had developed their own approach to MIL. But there were common issues, challenges, and success stories that were relevant for everyone. It was these topics and issues of common interest we discussed and presented during our online networking conference.
Kyaw Myo Thura Htun is a freelance journalist from Myanmar. We had to shorten his statement to make it fit into our template. This is his full quote, "MIL is an essential skill for becoming an informed and responsible audience in today’s powerful and complex media landscape. The content presented in media can often contain biased perspectives, misinformation, or hidden commercial intentions, so it is crucial for readers to be able to critically evaluate accuracy, purpose, and intent. Blindly accepting media messages without analysis can influence one’s social and political views and contribute to the spread of false information. Therefore, having the ability to question, interpret, and assess media content is increasingly important for audiences in this modern age."

It's ( ) and today we are going back just one month. On December 13, 2025, our partner Myanmar Health Support MHS conducted The second Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Student Exchange Workshop at the Khwe Kabaung Learning Center. The workshop was student led with a representative from Khwe Kabaung delivering the opening and welcoming remarks.
During the exchange, students engaged in in-depth discussions on the growing challenges posed by online fraud cyberbullying and the spread of fake news and misinformation.
Particular attention was given to the current situation in Myanmar where online scams and digital fraud have increasingly affected communities highlighting the urgent need for media and information literacy.
In addition students independently developed and presented detailed plans for activities they intend to implement in the coming academic years demonstrating strong leadership critical thinking and collaborative skills.
Great work! Congratulations 🎓

Late last year, over 70 MIL stakeholders from Cambodia and abroad met in Phnom Penh for the annual MIL Kh network conference. The meeting brought together representatives from government and civil society, content creators, journalists, educators, and learners. At this year's conference, the focal topic was how to include marginalized groups, such as ethnic minorities, rural youths from far-away provinces, and members of the LGBTQI+ community. The meeting offered MIL organizations, Mil educators, and the education ministry an opportunity to showcase their recent MIL activities and approaches.

Can you tell the difference between AI-generated videos and real videos? You can test your skills in this game.
Here are some helpful hints how can you tell if an image is AI generated.
Close examination of intricate details such as reflections, shadows, and textures can reveal inconsistencies or anomalies that are not typically found in natural images.
AI-generated images often struggle with complex patterns or the nuanced interplay of light and shadow.
The presence of artifacts or distortions, especially in areas where different elements intersect or in backgrounds, can be indicative of AI generation.
Finally, analyzing the symmetry and proportions of objects and figures in the image can help.

Test your ability to distinguish between AI-generated videos and real videos. Sharpen your skills in this visual test and see how you stack up against others!
